The engine is exactly the same. The rating changed because of the new SAE HP rating specs. They now have to rate an engine on the minimum octane fuel required by the manufacturer, in this case regular. That's why the figure dropped to 268. You would still get around 280 if you used premium fuel.

The dodo bird had told me to expect the new Highlander to be the size of the Sienna (approxiamately 200 in in length). It supposed will have the look near the new Mercedes with all cool things coming to a store near you. Toyota will be very tight lipped about this vehicle like they are with all the others.

Hello, I drive the 2002 Tundra Access Cab 4x4 (with V6 5-speed!). It has always been my dream to also own a 4Runner, I've loved it ever since I saw one on the lot in 1987 when I was purchasing my 1987 SR5 Truck. I feel the last generation was the perfect sport ute--perfect size, perfect engine (the 183 horse V6) superb crash test results, and tough, tough, tough, with awesome reliability (and it had a 5-speed!). Now my family is looking for another vehicle to replace our 1995 Honda Accord, I would love to get the 4Runner, (even though it is bigger and dosen't have the manual trans) but the gas mileage is just too low, and I'm not sure I could fit it in our garge with my Tundra. We are looking at the Highlander, which I feel is a damn fine vehicle, but it just dosen't get me excited like the 4Runner does. (We are looking at the 4 Cylinder 4WD version for better gas mileage) Now we have the NEW RAV4, I really like the old one, but it is too small, now it looks like it will be at least as big as the last generation 4Runner, so maybe I need to look closely at this. It really bothers me that the carmakers are always making things bigger, bigger, BIGGER!!! Just look at ANY vehicle, the 4Runner, my Honda Accord, etc. Anyways, any comments on the size of new RAV, or 4Runner and Highlander, I'm always ready to hear about. Cheers, JadeRain

You might try surfing over to http://www.rav4world.com/ and checking out the 4.3 Forum for more info on the RAV.
Lots of good information (and speculation) over there. My wife has an 01' RAV and I've lurked there for years for information.
I'm already trying to convince the wife to get an 08', the year my Tundra is paid off.

The new RAV4 is really close to the current Highlander in size. Check out the specs, they're really close to each other. I'm actually happy Toyota made it bigger and is offering a V6, we've been thinking about getting one.
My 4Runner V6 is pretty good on gas (for an SUV). I've gotten as high as 25mpg on the freeway. But most people seem to be getting lower mileage. As for the Highlander, it's a nice SUV. But like you, I've always liked 4Runners and it was just more appealing to me.
Yeah, if you go off-road alot, then you should get the 4Runner, but if you don't, the Highlander or Rav4 would be a good choice, also. I heard that 4Runner MPG isn't bad, though.
They may target different audiences, but in actuality the I find it hard to believe myself, but then again the new 4Runner hasn't exactly been the most reliable or best selling Toyota ever made, and the lukewarm reviews seemingly across the board haven't helped.
My understanding that the new 4 Runner has been an extremely reliable and solid vehicle. I find it hard to believe that it is not doing well for Toyota. The only problems with reliability that I am aware of was in consumer reports ratings of the early (first year model) 2003 4 Runners eqquipped with a newly designed V6 engine. This problem was quickly addressed by Toyota and the reliablility is now first rate.
I agree, the new RAV4 will overlap the Highlander. At the moment the (buy a) Toyota site does not show the 3.5 V6 as an option for the 2006 RAV4 if you try to work a quote. It only lists the 4 Cyl. So I cannot even get an MSRP for a base V6.
Given the power of this V6, they should have used the 2.7L 4 cyl from the 2x4 Tacoma since it attains more torque and nearly the same HP as the 2.4, but at lower RPMs.
We will be in the market for a sedan-like SUV soon, but we need to stay below 25K.
The V6 is supposed to become available mid January 06.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
