RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "Transmission engagement in 5th gear", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I've owned my 1998 Rav4 with a 5 spd for almost 8 yrs. Recently the transmission comes out of 5th with highway driving. Now I've experienced this before at around 47,000 kms while the vehicle was still under warranty. The dealer repaired the problem and now it's back at 147,000 kms showing. I'm familiar with the tsb TC001-01 which lists the parts and the repair manual RM595U. Can anyone provide me with this repair detail as I understand, it can be performed without removing the transmission from the vehicle.
Hi, I have a 1999 rav4 with 120,000kms. It just started popping out of 5th gear on the highway as your did. Did you ever find a solution or repair. I am hoping I can do it myself if the transmission can stay in. Please let me know what you found out, thanks. Mark.
Hi Mark,
After checking the web very carefully I decided to attempt the repair myself. I did so about a month ago and so far, the stick is rock solid, no movement when you accelerate or release the gas pedal. Now Mark I'm at a different location tonight, so I don't have all the information on hand, but be patient and I'll give you all the p/n's involved and the tooling required as soon as I can. This repair can be done with the transmission in the vehicle.

Can you post details of the repairs you made? My 96 RAV4 just started popping out of 5th gear this week and the local shop gave me an estimate of $4,000 to put in a rebuilt. The vehicle only has 59,000 miles on it.
Thanks -- Don
