RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "impressions of 2006 RAV4 owners?", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
The clunk is probably caused by the increased idle speed when cold. The computer cracks the throttle open to warm the engine faster for emmissions purposes. This means that more torque is applied to the transmission when you shift, as compared to when its at regular idle speed.
quick question. what size wheels are best for this vhicle, 16 17 or 18 inch?
I'm looking at a 2006 Sport, with 18 inch wheels. Very nice vehicle. I've had Toyota vehicles exclusively for the past 12 years, so I'm know what I'm getting, just curious about tire sizes and difference.
Thanks!

don't have a choice when it comes to wheels . 16" is standard on the base.. 17" is optional on base. Limited only gets 17" and Sports only gets 18". Personally I like the 18" Sport wheels that your looking at the best
I bought the Rav and will post some pics soon. It's a 2006 Sport, white, moon roof, 4 cyl, etc. I do like it. Anybody know a good online site to order the window visors and front shield?
OK, here is a pic of the RAV. I really like this vehicle!
I envy you owners of V6 RAV4s! I would own one for sure, if it wasn't for the big fishing boat in the garage. I really like SUVs for my pursuit of the outdoor sports, but had to go with a Tundra for the towing ability. Maybe when the truck is paid off and my oldest through college maybe I can relegate the truck to only towing duties and get a RAV4 for my daily driver...
But as far as the gas mileage is concerned, I want to make two points...
1) it DOES get better as the motor breaks in. I have definitely seen a 1-2 mpg increase in my Tundra over the first 9000 miles.
2) the higher your expectations for gas mileage, the more obsessive you become over it. Just stop checking it!!! You have a great vehicle and a few miles per gallon plus or minus probably isn't enough to make you make a change in vehicles. Just forget about it.... I for the most part stopped checking on my Tundra. I needed a truck with a V8 to pull my boat and I got the best truck, so gas mileage is no longer a factor.

Nice to see someone else from the Tulsa area. I live in Owasso and work in Tulsa. My Rav is an '06 Savannah Metallic Base. I travel 169 alot, might see you there.

We have the same exact problem with the transmission clunk. The dealer told us there was nothing they could do about it. I'm new to the forum, or I would have replied much sooner. On a different note, have you experienced any problems with gear searching and/or a hesitation when coming out of turns between 5-15 mph? It's probably the single most annoying thing about our RAV. I was able to ride with a technician at the dealer and duplicate this issue at least twice, but they said there was nothing wrong and it was just how the "fly by wire" electronic accelerator behaved--I'm still searching the posts for more info. I'm also curious if anyone has replaced the stock Geolandar G91's. We're at 16k miles now and it seems like the road noise is getting louder and louder--I'm thinking about trying some Michelin Cross Terrain SUV's. As far as gas mileage goes, we get 21 in the city, but have never gotten over 25 on the highway, even when averaging 65mph. This is obviously still pretty good with the V6, but it really erks me that Toyota put 28 for highway on the sticker. We used to have a 97 Suburban K1500 that was rated for 14 and 18 and we actually got about 15 and 19.
I've had my six-cylinder, AWD '07 RAV4 Limited for about six weeks or so and mostly driven it around the neighborhood and short distances on the freeway. I've driven 977 miles as of my last fill-up (only the fifth since buying the car) and averaged 21.8 mpg over that time. (I track it on a spreadsheet.) I last filled up the tank yesterday after completing a 101-mile trip, mostly on freeways. My freeway/surface-street driving was roughly 60/40 on that tank and I got 24.3 mpg. (Part of the freeway portion included a climb over a 1,800-foot summit in the Santa Cruz mountains, but then it also included a downhill "coast" in each direction, so I figure it sort of evens out.) I'm hoping for better mileage as the engine "breaks in" and all the parts mesh together or whatever they do with time. Hope this helps.
