They are not known for having problems.
Why do you think it is going bad? Symptoms? noises?
Lets try to diag it before you spend money for no reason.

Can you elaborate on your oil pump problem, what is it doing? We have a two Rav family, a 98 with 147,000 kms (90,000 miles) and a 2003 with 80,000 kms ( 50,000 miles), no oil pump problems so far.

The oil light came on. I turned around to come home and I noticed a ticking noise. It also just didn't want to excelerate. When I got home I ckecked the oil level and it was fine. I looked for oil leeks and could not find any. So, I assumed it was the oil pump

Has the Rav been well maintained?
If it has you might have a Oil sending unit problem. A oil pressure test will determine if the oil pressure is ok.
If it has not been maintained well, then I would suggest just removing the oil pan to see if there is any SLUDGE build up, clean the pan and replace the oil pump pic up tube, then check the oil pressure.

Thank you for your input. I ended up having it towed. I know some about cars but not enough. Got a call from the dealer today. They say I need to replace the whole engine!! They found that the oil pan had a big dent in it ( I knew that was there, hit a big pot hole), I guess it hit hard enought that it broke something metal off in the oil pump and it ground it into the oil. There are metal shavings all thru my engine. My husband changes the oil most of the time and we have not seen anything in the oil. We just changed it not long ago. Is this possible for that metal to be all thru the engine when I didn't see it when I change the oil? The damage, to the oil pan was over a year ago. I also just had it in to the dealer 3 weeks ago for 50k maint. and inspection.

I had my car at the toyota dealer 5 times in two weeks for leaks. I was very low on oil and kept loosing coolant. They changed the oil pan gasket and a few other things. When I got my car back I changed the oil and filter back to amsoil. When I took the filter off after the car had been running, it was dry. A friend said my oil pump was not working. Anyone have any information on this?

Hi, new to the forums. we own 2 Toyotas, the 2003 Rav4 4x4 has an issue similar to the above. My wife had the check engine light come on about 3 weeks ago, then the oil light started to flicker. We had it in the shop, nothing the mechanic could find wrong other than a little low on oil. ran good for a couple weeks, then same thing again, but now the engine has a rapping noise after you drive it for 10 minutes. Our mechanic is 20 minutes away, so on the way over, I stopped, shut it off, and then waited a couple minutes. Oil gauge reads full, I added a half quart prior to heading out. No puddles, no drips, nothing on the undercarriage or top side, or in the coolant. Started back up, running fine, no warning lights on. 10 minutes later, same thing again. Our mechanic thinks its too big a job for him, has sent us to the big boys where he thinks it will run $2000 to square it away. His diagnosis shows an oil pressure of 10 psi. My question, is the repair bill on an oil sending unit/pump/oil pan removal going to run that deep? Does it require a engine pull to get at the pieces? Shop rates here are $80 an hour. I have heard on other model years that not using specifically toyota oil filters can screw this up and I dont know whats under there, or that there might be a screen/oil filler tube thats gummed up internally, can this be the cause?
Lastly, is it safe to drive another 10 minutes to the new garage, or should we have it towed?

Thanks for your input (And we trust our mechanic).

late to this post...but I think towing it would be sensible. Cause I would not want to even start the engine anymore.

We have an 2002 Rav 4 with the oil light flickering problems and now the engine makes noise like the lifters rattling. Plenty of oil in the engine.
Where is the pickup tube screen located and has there been any problems with the oil pump?
Hope I don't have to replace the engine. It's only got 89,000 miles on it.
Thanks

Default Re: Rav 4 Oil Pump

On my 07' RAV4 just got rid of, there was oil gaskets leaking a small amount of oil, but no abnormal noises. The water pump also was leaking fluides at the same time on the V6 engine. So, I did not want to deal with anymore issues, so got rid of it - good riddens! Best of luck trying to find out what inside the engine is damaged, especially if like you say the engine is not leaking or low on oil/pressure, etc.. I won't keep a vehicle if only after 2 years and 27K of driving there is 2 major problems with an engine because who knows what else will go wrong with it after warranty if the engine cannot even last 2 years without major problems like mine. They claim it is not typical for oil gaskets and water pumps to leak fluids after only 2 years and being well taken care of. I just think I got one engine with poor quality parts from the factory - my luck of course.
