RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "2006 Rav4 Gas Mileage", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
With the Sport model I am getting around 20 mpg and I am sort of disappointed with that. Anyone else seeing that the gas mileage isn't as good as expected?
Since our Highlander got rear-ended, I currently have a Sport as a rental car. The Highlander is an 01 4-cyl 2wd model. In the same drive cycles, the Highlander got slightly better mileage than the RAV. The Highlander gets around High 24's Low 25's. I've only been able to calculate one tank in the RAV because I wasn't shure if the first tank was full. The RAV got mid 24's, I'll see how the next few tanks go. The Highlander won't be ready for another week and a half.
Our 06 4cyl 2wd gets about 25-28.5 depending on the mix of city/freeway. I did get one tank that was almost all stop and go with a lot of idling in town that was about 23.8 and a best of 28.9 on a 300 mile round trip mostly cruising. I am fairly happy. Our 06 Solara that we traded in (same engine but a 5speed auto) got about 1-2mpg better on average. Thats my biggest complaint is that they didn't put the 5speed auto in the Rav.
hello, well, don't want to be harsh, but what kind of mileage did you expect with a 270 horsepower motor?! For the power you have, I think you are doing pretty good. I have the 2006 four wheel drive Limited with the 4 cyl engine. I live in a place where we only have about 10 miles of highway, and 40 miles of road (one way) in general, so lots of short drives, tough on engines and gas mileage. I was hoping for a solid 23 mpg with this RAV4, but my last four tanks have all been over 25 mpg!! I'm ecstatic over that. My low tank was 23 back in late winter when temps were colder. We thought about the Highlander hybrid, but really couldn't afford $35,000, and it dosen't look like it would have got the 30 mpg that I was hoping for. cheers. Jaderain

I must agree with you on your first sentence, that is alot of muscle, and the Rav isn't the tiniest vehicle, so you're not gonna be able to cheat physics and get a constant 30 mpg. For the V6, low to mid 20's average mpg sounds about right.

Thank you for all the posts. My 4x2, 07, Rav4, Sport V6 has covered less than 100 miles and it is nice to have some real idea about what to expect.
Yes, 270 HP on a 3500 pound, not-so-areodynamic vehicle does not uqual great gas mileage. A light touch on the throttle will be a good strategy. But its soooo difficult to hold her back! Zoom, Zoom! (oops, wrong car)
Second tank fill-up on new V6 RAV4 4WD Sport with 615 on the odometer. Getting 22.5 GPM in primarily heavy stop/go freeway traffic in Houston, TX with max AC running, fan on high, and stereo cranked-up. Not bad at all for a 270-horse engine that I juice a little at times to shake a tail-gater or grab a lane. I expect open road mileage will be even better (But only if I resist the temptation to stay out of the throttle). Can't wait to get this little brute ute broken-in and give it some full throttle trials.
