Default Hitch Wiring Problem 2006

Had a hitch installed on the wife's RAV4. They connected the brake light wire to the thin wire thqt goes to the stop light. This caused the computer to light up the ABS and VSC warning lights. Disconnecting it cured the problem.

Anyone know where I can safely hook up the brake connection to the trailer connector?

Here's one man's instructions for installing the factory harness. It has lots of pics so it takes a while to download.

Don't want to install the factory harness. All the other hook ups work fine. I just need to find out where I can tap into the brake light and not cause the computer tot hink there is something wrong with the brake system.

Umm, maybe if you read the factory install instructions, it will give you a clue where it's supposed to be connected!!!

Despite the local indication of the U-haul store and thier computer lookup, the basic $16 taillight converter, (and others, I'll presume) when installed caused the symptons you describe in my own installation. My investigation revealed an indication that because the 2006+ model year RAV4 uses LED tail lamps that the basic converter is enough of a draw(?) to convince the dash sensors that that you've got an ABS problem.

To be specific, I noted that it was actually using the turn indicators but not the running lights or brake lamps that caused the dash sensors to indicate error. I went back to U-haul to question them about the frequency of defective converters, but quickly concluded from the shrugging shoulders of the counter person that that wasn't worth the effort.

Long story short, the resolution was to use a powered converter, like $40 U-haul #13493 (U-Haul moving supplies: Trailer Light Power Module) and tap the power from the back side of the 12v power plug in the rear cargo area.

Hope this helps....

to add my 2 cents - a powered tailight converter is what you need for the LED tail lights..... drawtite has the converter with easy connectors......the power come directly off the battery..... I installed the hitch assy in literally 10 minutes....feeding the power wire to the battery took about 30 minutes......

Hitch, converter / wiring, carrier at a good price.....

i bought an 08 with installed uhaul hitch and converter. worked fine for awhile. now right trailer tail light remains on anytime trailer is plugged up. the green black wires light on the converter remains on to. i noticed this problem after replacing a blown fuse. any ideas about the cause. i suspect the pos uhaul converter is shot.it has sep power wire to batt but cheepo splices on wires in back.

it/'s been awhile but my recommendation remains the same except you can source the converter/isolator module from etrailer.com...... for somewhere around $54......

Junk the uhaul settup..... the have no idea how to setup the wiring with LED tailights - proof is in the results......

I put the same setup on my new Venza..... works fine without any problems..... only difference - it does not have LED tailights????
