What kind of link is this? I havent got my rav4 yet but would like to purchase the link in advance before i pick up the car.

What do you use to connect the ipod to the aux.

Please give me a direct link to the cable if possible thanks.

You will need a male-to-male 3.5mm stereo plug adapter cable. One end will plug into the 3.5mm socket (the "headphone" socket) on your iPod, the other end will plug into the 3.5mm AUX input socket (inside the lower section of the armrest bin between driver's and passenger's seats) in your RAV4. You will press the DISC-AUX button on the face of your RAV's audio unit to display AUX, which will now be receiving the output from your iPod.
I made my own adapter cable, using shielded paired audio cable and 2 3.5mm plugs, but you should be able to buy a ready-made cable from any decent audio store. I see at least one in the Radio Shack pages:
RadioShack.com - Cables, Parts & Connectors: A/V cables: Speaker cables: Recoton (ACW-343) 6-Ft. Deluxe Mini Stereo Cable
This one happens to be 6 feet long, which may be more than you want or need. Radio Shack's catalog numger for this cable is 55016326.
The RAV's 6-CD audio system is nice when it works, but mine is already scheduled with the dealer for warranty replacement because of intermittent random garbage characters in the LCD display.

Also, checkout
http://www.proclipusa.com/

They have very nice holders for iPods (and other devices) that go with custom mounts for all kinds of cars. I have one in my Corolla and one in my RAV4.

How is it that a simple headphone jack cable allows the stereo to control the ipod? I'm fascinated by this.

The male to male headphone jack cable connects the ipod to the RAV4's aux port, allowing the ipod's audio to be heard through the car's stereo system. You still control the ipod through the ipods controls.

If you want to be able to control your iPod from the RAV4's JBL controls you must buy an iPod Interface adapter that is made specifically for your vehicle such as this one: ipod to toyota interface 1998 to 2006 pa11 aux

Yes.

You probably resolved this anoying problem already, but in case you haven't, you need an isolator. You plug the cable from the iPod into the the isolator and then output cable of the isolator into the car jack. It may be called a "hum" isolator or "alternator" isolator or "ground loop" isolator. I think I got the one I have at Circuity City for about $20. You could probably get one at any auto audio installer.

I have a 2006 Rav4, bought it new in September. I just bought an Ipod as well, bought the car charger, and the 3.5mm stereo cable. Hooked it up, and it sounds like a cassette tape is squealing, NOT a good noise and I can't drown it out no matter how loud I put the stereo. There's a lot of hissing and static noise as well. Would an isolater help with this? I exchanged the stereo cable for another, thinking maybe the cable wasn't any good. I got the same result. The ipod sounds perfect with headphones, or the stereo at home, so it's not an Ipod issue.
I have an appointment with the dealership in a few days for this and because the remote starter already died. I would rather avoid the hassle of asking the dealership to replace the stereo which most likely will be a battle.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I got an ipod because the car had the adaptor option, and would love to use it!!

I bekieve it is a common cable you can pick up at Radio Shack etc. The plug is the same size of the headphone connector on both sides. PM me if you need a pic.

This is a known issue with the Rav4's. I have a 2006Rav4 and the first day I got it I hooked my Ipod up with the charger and noticed the problem. If you don't use the charger and just use the ipod by itself, it is fine. I called the dealer and they are aware of the problem. In fact, Even the owners manual for the Rav mentions the problem. I forget the exact wording they use, but if you look in the manual under the radio section, it mentions that you may experience "noise" when plugging in an auxillary device while also using the charger. There is nothing Toyota will do about it.

I have gone through two aux port cables in the 6 months I've had my Rav. The connection inside the cable seems to keep breaking. I can tell because depending on the way I turn the cable around the plug my ipod will play through all speakers or just the ones on the right or left.

I'd appreciate some advice to help me prevent breaking my next replacement cable. Has anyone drilled through their armrest somewhere to avoid dropping it down on the cable? I suspect that's how mine keeps getting damaged.

You know, that is a great question! So far my wife has not broken any cables but the other day i took her car to the store and noticed how the lid shuts down on the cable and thought to myself, "how long until this cable breaks"?.

I think tomorrow I will attempt to modify her console and I will post pics if all goes well.

FYI, there is a TSB out now for the whining noise in the aux port, with replacement parts. I don't have the link, but check out TSB's here or on Rav4world. They replace the port, add a filter and a new harness. Recommendation on the wiring to your ipod, you can run the wire under the console depending on where you have your ipod. I keep mine in the console so it is not an issue, but I did run my Starmate for Sirius under the console, and put a small hole inside the console next to the aux port and ran the wire inside the console and then plugged it in. The pocket where your power mirror buttons and the cell phone pocket comes straight out if you pull up on it for access. The panel that the aux port is on will then come out by pushing on the plastic clips on the inside.
