RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "New Guy with Bad Clutch Linkage Adjustment", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Greetings from the soon to be frozen almost North of NH, USA. I can't say I'm ready for the winter just yet! I have a 2005 5spd base RAV4 that I got as a new/leftover on President's Day for $18K. We Like the vehicle in general with the exception of the self-adjusting, non-adjustable(?), mal-adjusted clutch. My spousal unit has been having a bit of a problem shifting through the gears, so I took the beast out for a spin (the Rav that is ...) and, low-and-behold, the clutch takeup is only about 1/4in. off the carpeting. I had problems even getting it into 1st at a stop! For a supposed solution, I bled the clutch slave with no improvement. Then I bled it again, running a few oz of DOT3 through it - also with NO improvement. Before I waste my time taking it to the Dealer (who will most likely say, "That's normal operation"), Is anyone aware of a TSB or procedure to adjust the engagement point? I looked under the dash and every thing appeared to be properly adjusted (minor clearance to slave pushrod from pedal linkage) and I assume the pushrod on the bellhousing is non-adjustable - or IS it? Background note: I have worked as a Master Tech on foreign autos in the latre 70's.

The car is new! why should I have to replace all these parts?! The car has under 10K miles on it. The car was bought in 2006 as a 2005 model from previous year. Car had no miles on it when I bought it. I guess no one wanted a manual transmission. Now I know why. 18 K for a new rav is a good price w/ no trade; the KBB wholesale is over 20K!

well...you could just replace the clutch plate but it would be best to replace the other two while they are out. if the engagement point was correct when you bought the vehicle, then the clutch is worn out. since there are no adjustments, then the point of engagement is determined by the thickness of the clutch plate and flywheel. when you remove the transmission, you will also find that the flywheel is "blue". yspert
Yspert - What are you trolling? This car is new, for criminey sakes! - why should the clutch need replacing at 10K mile? I dont think you know what the F you're talking about. My wife drives fine - she did not wear the clutch. Its just a bad linkage adjustment. Bad design I suppose, just like the Tacoma. Another defective, un-repairable Toyota POS! If the dealer wont fix this, it's arbitration time. Piece of Junk! My Bosses Camry died due to a sludged engine and it only had 50K miles - another piece of junk.
He's saying the clutch grabs just 1/4" from the floor, am I correct in that? I don't think that's usually indicitive of a bad clutch, that'd be the other way around.
I don't really have any good suggestions, but it wasn't like this when you got the vehicle right? I'd take it back, after the first year, or 12k or so, they won't even look at wear and tear items.
I took it to the dealer and they said, " Its is functioning as designed" which does not necessarily mean that it is working correctly They said that the floor mat can get under the clutch pedal, which is not true, sincer it has hooks to keep it in place. I did notice the pedal stop is just a bracket off the bottom of the peadl arm with a rubber snubber on it. I may see where it touches the floor and cut the carpet and pad away under there to try and eek out anothet 1/4 ". I have always hated self adjusting clutches. and this is why. This ruins the synchros not being able to fully disengege the pressure plate - never minfd the struggle to engage first from a stop Toyota service used to be ranked worst - and cant disagree with that
