Default 2008 Hybrid Rav 4?

Anyone hear any news about a possible Rav4 Hybrid for next year? I really like the new design but would love to have the hybrid option.

I'd be interested also in the hybrid Rav. Hope we hear something this summer.

When I read the Car and Driver article on the new Rav, they reported that Toyota said the platform isn't designed to accept any hybrid powertrains "so dont wait around for one".........I'm just quoting what they said!! I'm not sure though......We'll just have to "wait around" I guess..

A couple years ago I thought Toyota had promised hybrid options across their entire lineup by mid 20teens or something. Since the sienna I believe is getting one and the Camry/Hybrid does, I would expect one to compete with the Ford Escape/Saturn VUE. Can you imagine how much power and mpg a V6 hybrid Rav would have?

First, the quote above from C&D is correct, and the RAV isn't supposed to be made to accept a hybrid.

Second, if they did, I'm sure they'd pair it with the 4-cyl, as in the Camry. Toyota seems to be leaving the powerhouse hybrids to Lexus, and the fuel-eff. hybrids for Toyota.

Thrid, they have a hybrid SUV, the Highlander that has not sold well. The new one is coming next year and should have some pleasant surprises. In one picture, I saw button that looked like it will allow you to drive short distances in all electric mode, as the Prius can do in foreign markets.

Finally, since Ford licenses the Hybrid technology from Toyota, I bet somewhere there is a deal that Toyota wouldn't compete directly, however that doesn't explain the Altima Hybrid.

Anyway, don't hold your breath. If you want a Hybrid RAV4, buy a current gen Highlander...they're almost the same size and you can get it RIGHT NOW.

ford gets the transmissions from a 30% Toyota owned company, Aisin.

There Hybrid system is unique.

This poster is misguided. Ford has licensed the hybrid technology from Toyota so as not to infringe on Toyota's hybrid patents.

If Toyota is content to keep the Highlander as the only SUV hybrid I think that they are missing something. I think it didn't sell well because people didn't find the mpg that impressive - especially when considering the extra cost, Honda learned that with the V6 accord hybrid that sold so poorly. At least that is why I haven't considered it. There is a huge opportunity to add hybrid technology to a small SUV that already boasts 30mpg/hwy.
If it is indeed due to the Escape, that would be foolish for Toyota to block themselves out the small SUV hybrid market for licensing $ and royalties.

It would only make sense for them to offer one. Ford and now Saturn has them. The Vue is rated at 25/32mpg with a 4 speed auto - I'm sure Toyota can do better than that.

I would love to see it happen as my wife will be looking at getting a Rav in the next year or two. She even keeps asking me "When is it going to come out?"
Fill us in Toyota.
