Hello all! How do I really know if my 4 wheel drive is kicking in?? I was under the understanding that when it started spinning, the 4 wheel drive kicked in. We have a lot of snow today, and I was all over the place. The way I was spinning, I dont think it was. Any ideas on what the problem could be?
What I dont like, is there isn't even a indicator on the dash when it kicks in, as newer models have.

Have someone stand outside the Rav and watch all 4 wheels (2 @ a time)when you push on the gas and make the wheels spin. My son has one with limited slip and all 4 wheels will spin. 4 wheel drive only helps when you accelarate. If your tires are spinning and your turning you will be all over the road. Hope this helps.
Alas, the great 4-wheel drive myth. I think those ads showing 4x4's plowing through drifts give people the wrong idea. The last poster was correct - you get better traction in straight line acceleration but if (when) you lose traction in very slippery conditions a-spinning you will go. A 4x4 or all wheel drive may be MORE dangerous in these conditions.
Frankly, good snow tires on a front wheel drive vehical are safer for some drivers. Drive with care in bad conditions, maintain your vehical, and don't get distracted. Been there.
