ScionGeneral discussion forum for Scion vehicles (Scion xB, tC & xD).
This is a discussion thread titled "Why no shift to OD until blue light out?", within the Scion forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
The 2004-2006 xA and xB automatics will not shift into overdrive until the blue coolant light goes out. According to my ScanGuage, the light goes out at 137F on the way to an operating temperature of 185F.
I have heard the following opinions of why the shift into overdrive must wait until the blue light goes out:
1. Makes the converter warm up faster to reduce emissions.
2. Won't shift until the transmission fluid gets warm.
3. Avoids heavy throttle loading on cold engine at low rpms.
Is there any printed reference from Scion that states the reason? I can't find any.

The owners manual says it will not shift into overdrive until the light goes out but does not say why.

I had heard that statement was in the manual, but cannot find it. Can you give the page number?
As you say, it does not explain the reason for preventing the upshift to overdrive.
Edit several days later: Have searched the manual several times and don't see it.

It is on page 88. I found it in the manual for an 06 Xb on this site.

Thanks for finding it. It says:
"... If the engine coolant temperature is low, the transmission will not shift into overdrive gear even with the overdrive on."
The effect of this is to keep the RPMs higher in 3rd gear until the engine has reached 137F on the way to full warm up at 185F. I speculate this is either to avoid low RPMs in overdrive with a cold engine, or to hasten warmup for economy, or both. I just wish I could find Scion's own explanation of the purpose of this feature.
