Default XB drivetrain roar

Hello to all, as this is my first post.
I have an XB which I thoroughly enjoy; however, over the course of the 18 months I have had it, an ugly scenario has begun to make it's presence known.
I purchased this vehicle with totally stock wheels and tires. I noticed after I had driven it for a week or so, that it had a barely noticeable high-pitched whine that rose and fell with speed. When coasting, I took it out of gear(automatic) and the noise never changed a lick. I then took curves a little faster and sharper to load the front end and only then would the noise be somewhat different.
Now, after 33,000 miles it has gotten very loud and it is now a roar. I now have to turn the radio up almost uncomfortably to try and mask this noise. I purchased two new Goodyear Assurance tires for the front and the noise has not changed in the least. Also, no noise from the rear.
Has anyone heard anything about this. From what I have read, the running gear is Echo all of the way, so maybe something from that end would be available for use. To me, it seems the transaxle is at fault. It it weren't for this noise, the car would be perfect. It shifts smoothly as can be...its a great car.
I am going to take it to the dealer, but I wanted a little more background info from the experts before I go. I am not going to tell them what is wrong, but I want to make sure I am not going to be fed a line of CC(cow chips), when I'm told "Sir, they all do that".
So, if anyone could help me out with this, I would be most appreciative.
Bill

Rises and falls with road speed, not with engine speed, and is not affected by coasting in neutral at speed, but is affected by turns and loads on the front wheels.
That would be the CV joints, not the transmission.

Thanks for the views, and the response from vintage42. It ended up being the right-side wheel bearing assy. Local dealer changed it today and it sooo... quiet. I just knew the dealer would tell me "hey, they all do that!" .
Thanks again,
Bill Pippin

I forgot about wheel bearings. I never had one go bad in almost 50 years of driving, with several cars run to 100K and 150K miles.
