Default Re: How to get a great deal on an '08 Platinum Sequoia...

My head really hurts today because I did a 180.

The Platinum I bought came in with the wrong color. I gave them two days to find me another Platinum in Black or Artic Pearl with a Graphite interior and they could not. I got my (non-refundable) deposit back and started my search all over. I needed to buy this year so I could not let them take every last day to fail me once more.

I called a previous dealer I had spoken to and they said they had an Arctic Frost Pearl with Tan interior and would beat my previous deal’s price by another $500 relative to invoice. I really wanted a Graphite interior, but the extra $500 would help convince me to consider Tan. I went and saw it, and thought the Tan looked fine. I was, however, concerned about how I would put two kid’s seats in the 2nd row and get access into the 3rd row with the non-removable center-console. I saw two bolts inside the console and figured I could remove it and unplug the heated-seat controls, but it seemed like a waste to do that (being uncertain if there was carpet under it and to scrap the heat controls).

I noticed a Slate Metallic SR5 on the lot with a Graphite interior and decided to check it out. I had not considered Slate (or an SR5), but in person it was *really nice.* There was something else about the looks which I could not pin down at the time. Now I think it is that the SR5 does not have chrome mirrors or door handles. It looks better without the chrome – or at least no worse. Also it had a bench seat, which I now decided would be better for our child-seat situation than even captain’s chairs with a pass-through. Also it keeps the dog from getting forward as he loves to come into the driver’s seat when I leave him in our other car. Biggest downside is you have to fold a seat to get into the 3rd row, but the upside is we will need the 3rd row much less and hence can keep it folded more often for cargo.

The Graphite was by far the best interior color – especially on an SR5 as many of the plastic-dipped-in-fake-chrome bits were black in the SR5. The fact that the top insides of the door was hard plastic rather than covered in soft fake leather did not look worse as the hard plastic looked nice in black (probably looks not so great in tan). I had previously only seen a grey-inside on a Tundra and this looked better than I remember that. The Tundra had grey upper door panels. These areas being black on the SR5 Sequoia were a bonus.

Also it had a leather-wrapped steering wheel -- in an SR5! How could this be? I previously ruled out the SR5 because I 'knew' it was not possible to get it with a leather wheel and I didn’t want an aftermarket wrap as they are thicker and never look right. Other features: 5.7L 4x4 with 6 speed, locking center diff, cold kit, leather interior in all rows, heated power seats, heated side mirrors, Bluetooth, headlight washers, power folding 3rd row, fog lamps, power moon roof, nav, JBL, backup camera, running boards, rear spoiler, DRL, tow prep, carpeted floor mats, and door sill protectors. This is almost $9,000 in retail options. Why not just get a Limited? I might have, but this was in front of me and there was just one more day of the year. Also -- a Limited with adding nav, DRL, sunroof, rear spoiler, and cold kit (options this car had) would have been $3700 more. So what would a Limited have that this SR5 did not in exchange for $3700?

1. Leather-trimmed console lid. (The plastic I have looks ok).

2. IR glass.

3. Optitron instruments. (I Looked at this and could not see it as better. It was white instead of orange but not ‘nicer’ though also tells you in words things like which door is open).

4. Electrochromic mirror. (Don't mind flipping it but it would have been nice). I can add one if I want.

5. Chrome-door handles. (SR5 is body-painted which looks better to me. Saw a Lexus and Mercedes GL450 and they had painted door handles).

6. Sonar. (I do wish I had this).

So about $800 worth of stuff in my mind. Not worth $3000+ to me.

And, compared to the Platinum I intended to buy, I also gave up:

1. 20 inch wheels (tossup -- 18s should be better on the dirt road I drive on).
2. Memory on seats (Would be nice as my wife sometimes drives it).
3. Perforations in seats and AC through them. (this seemed kinda cool (pun)).
4. 2nd row heat (do not care).
5. Power rear hatch (I did want this. Love it on my Honda minivan – dog jumps out, etc.)
6. H-TEMS (I tried this and could not feel any difference).
7. Ride height control. Useless and it changes back to normal when you move.
8. Power steering wheel (pimp but whatever).
9. Headlamp cleaner (this is nice).
10. Turn signals on mirrors (don’t care). Mirrors that power fold? (kinda pimp and fun)
11. rear DVD. Kids do sometimes use it in the other car, but they also like kids CDs.
12. Laser cruise (I never use cruise control, but probably because it does not track the car in front of me. Perhaps this one I would use).
13. Remote start. (I am adding a much stronger two-way system to the SR5).

All of this is worth, to me, about another $4000. $5000 at most.

So I am rationalizing that I am better off giving up some fluff and saving the almost $12K on stuff that to me is only worth about $4000 and gaining the bench seat. Also it was the only way I could quickly get the Graphite interior. But the best part is – I no longer have to wonder if it was silly to spend $55+K on a Sequoia that was an AWESOME truck but not quite a luxury SUV. Now that I paid under $44K, I no longer need to ponder that. It seems like a nice sweet spot and I doubt it will feel under-equipped. It still has a nice leather interior, nav, JBL, and the good engine.

looks great and I think you got a nicely equipped rig. Let's face it, the 2nd row in a platinum was not going to suit your needs. Why pay for something you were going to tear out? I'm sure your dog is happy too. You've got everything you need, plus a significant savings. I think you did the right thing.

I take it you did not get the Extended Warranty. Any idea on what the retail and cost is on the 7 year. Being the first year of this new Sequoia it might add a little piece of mind.

I know Costco members can get $1500 over invoice right now. I am with you at $1000 over invoice is a sweet deal. I have been buying Ford and GMC at Up Fit/Fleet for years and I just can not bring myself to pay invoice, let a lone Retail for a rig. I have a Denali, wife a Suburban and father-in-law a QX56. I really like the GL550 but can't justify the extra $20,000. After driving the Sequoia, it will be my next rig.

How do you like the Red Rock interior? Have not seen one here in the NW. I am trying to find a Arctic Frost/Red Rock Platinum. The slate and tan are just too whimpy. I am not sure why they do not offer a little darker color. Many of these will be sold to families with kids to track all sorts of crap into the car. Light colors are just to hard to keep clean with them.

Great job and congrats. I personally would have gone to a local dealer that sells based on volume and not margin and got the car for $500 over invoice. I have never paid anything more than that ever. All it takes is some in person negotiating, mention of family referrals to their dealership and whatever else it takes.

About half the dealerships didn't reply. Most just wanted me to call or visit them. Some offerred a new Sequoia at MSRP. 2 offered a new Sequoia at $2000 off MSRP. 1 dealer offerred a Platinum at $1500 over Factory invoice. 1 offerred to sell a plat to me for $1000 over factory invoice. Both of these last 2 offers were in writing (email) without me having to provide any information about myself.

I contacted the dealership where I bought my last Avalon to provide them with a chance to sell me a new Sequoia. I even visited them to talk with my previous salesman. I told them I had a $1K over invoice offer and asked if there was anything they could do for me. After the salesman discussed it with the manager, they called me back to tell me that they did not believe any dealers were offerring '08 Sequoia's at $1K over invoice. I assured them I wasn't lying and they suggested I follow-up with them if it didn't work out. I said thank you.

I contacted the dealer that offered a new '08 Plat Seq at $1K over factory invoice. The Internet Mgr assigned me to a sales rep and I met with them this evening to write-up a contract for my new Plat Sequoia (7933). My contract is in hand for a new Black (202) Platinum Sequoia with a Red Rock interior (21) plus the following options I wanted:
  • Rear Entertainment - EY
  • Cold Kit - CK
  • DRL On/Off - RL
  • Preferred Accessories Package (carpeted mats, cargo mat, door sill protector, cargo net, first aid kit) - Z1
  • Wheel Locks - WL
The factory invoice for this vehicle in the NE included Destination charge, TDA, gas, dealer holdback and financial reserve was $52,418. The contracted price was $1000 over this factory invoice price ($53,418). The final price for this Platinum Sequoia was $5126 under MSRP or .912 of MSRP.

The out-the-door price included the following in addition to the vehicle cost above:
  • NJ sales tax - 7%
  • NJ tire tax (5x$1.50) - $7.50 (Is there anything NJ doesn't tax?)
  • On-line registration fee - $8.30
  • NJ Title and 4 yr registration - $334
  • clerical expense and document fees - $145
For a total out-the-door price of $57,676.06. It'll probably take 8+ weeks for this combination to be assembled as there is only 1 black/red rock Platinum combo in the Toyota inventory system (according to this dealer). As I'm in no hurry, that's OK from my perspective.

I specifically asked the dealer if he was OK sharing this information with all of you on this forum. The internet mgr. said it was absolutely OK and that he would welcome the opportunity to offer this same deal for any of you interested in an "internet sale" at this dealership located in Northern NJ. I have no personal interest in this dealership and did not meet the Net Mgr before this evening. I found both the Net Mgr and Salesman to be both competent and professional. The Net Mgr is Ron and my salesman was - Andrew. Very good guys that made the entire process an enjoyable experience.

I hope those of you on this forum that are interested in a Sequoia consider Ron as an option if you are in the market for a new Sequoia. Here's Ron's email address: rbailey@caldwelltoyota.com

You can get a 7yr/100,000mile/$0 deductible for under a $1000 on a 2008 Sequoia 4x4. The warranty includes a rental car upto $50 a day, $100 day for lodging and food if you break down more than 150 miles from home and unlimited towing to the nearest toyota dealership. I plan to buy my extended warranty from Troy. The retail price from Toyota for this coverage is $1850 on an '08 Sequoia. Toyota Financial Services

Here's the forum with more info on Troy that's worth reading. Toyota Extended Warranty (Platinum Plus)

I haven't taken delivery yet, scheduled for early to mid Feb. I saw the Red Rock interior on a white Tundra and really liked it. I think it's going to look sharp with the black carpeting and door panels with a black exterior. I've had several lighter colors and red/burgundy vehciles over the past couple of years and needed a change. Time to go back to a black exterior for me.

I signed my contract for a '08 Platinum Sequoia at $1000 over factory invoice (no additional nonsense added to the tab) during the first week of the vehicle's launch. This price was $5250 off MSRP. It may be possible to get a Platinum for $500 over however I think it is still unlikely this close to the launch.

I've heard others talk about dealers offering less than $1000 over invoice however I'm not sure I believe its for real. I have yet to read anyone that has signed a contract for a Platinum for $500 Over. Platinums may be a challenge to get a lower deal since Toyota is only planning to make 10% of the sequoia as a Platinum. I'm curious if anyone has add success in negotiating a Platinum for $500 over invoice or better?
