Default Gas Mileage for 08 Sequoia

Lets keep track of mileage you are getting for your 08 Sequoia. I just completed a 400 mile trip on my 2wd 5.7 SR5. 80% highway, 20 % in-town. I got 17.9 Avg for this trip. I reset the meter before leaving for this trip. I drove between 65 and 75. Did not use cruise crontrol a whole lot.
The new EPA estimate seem very close to actula MPG. I had 3 occupents, no towing load, 87 Octane Gas filled by Toyota dealer.
I was getting around 19-20 MPG mixed mileage for my 2006 Ody 3.5. Compared to a minivan 18 mpg for 5.7 L engine is very reasonable.

Sounds great, but .. .. I know my meter is wayyyy off on my Sequoia! Please track via real odometer miles and gallons. Me thinks most owners simply go by the readout (which gives manufacturers an incentive to have its readings be optimistic.) I believe you;ll find your real world miles to be lower.

My '84 bimmer's computer is actually remarkably accurate - but it was built in a different time,

I also have an 06 Honda minivan. I once compared tracking gallons and miles to the digital MPG readout, and they were within 1/10 MPG, so I trust it.

I was getting 18-20 with it when I had 30 PSI in the tires. Now I have about 44 PSI in the tires and get 19-21. I drive 65-75 MPH or so.

My 5.7L Sequoia has 33 PSI in the tires. So far in mixed driving and 2WD I have been getting in the 16s. It seems like I can get 18 with nearly all highway driving and I can get 13-14 with back hilly roads. In general, I expect I will be in the 16s. So this is about 3 MPG worse than the minivan.

On the next tank I will verify the MPG computer.

Just tested once more...

I get between 18.0 and 19.0 MPG (according to the trip computer) with cruise on 64 MPH on the highway. If I just do mixed driving and be somewhat careful but go up to 75 or so, then I get around 16 MPG. If I drive aggressively and on hilly back rounds, it is more like 13.

On my first tank, I averaged 14.4 MPG calculated by how many gallons I put in and the miles from the odo. I cannot be certain the dealer did not 'top off' the tank and over-fill it (hate when full-serve does that). If so, I got closer to 14 MPG. I filled it up and reset the odometer and will try again.

Also of note -- when the trip computer said my range was down to 41 miles left, the truck took 18.997 gallons. Since I got 14 MPG (driving rather aggressively), I can predict that the range would reach 0 miles when I used another 2.93 gallons. 26.4 (tank size) - 2.93 = 23.47. 23.47 - 18.997 = 4.472.

So when you have '0 miles left' you still have about 4.5 gallons. 4.5 * 14 MPG is 63 miles.

So when it says you have 0 miles left, you really have at least 60 (if you drive and accelerate as fast as me).

I would rather have 0 miles left mean 0 miles left!

I also tested this on my Honda minivan and it was also about 60 miles left when it says 0.

That is good that your sequoia give you 60 miles to spare
What happends if you tow a heavy load - and you get 10 mpg? then you have 40 miles to spare with heavy trailer in the middle of no where, when you travel. Another thing sux about 26 gallon tank, its not big enough when you tow a heavy load, about 250-300 miles on a tank.

that is main reason i love spare gallons of gas, when you really need it!

This is consistant with the 2007 Tundra... 0 on the "dist to empty" means you have 4-5 gal left in the tank and you can drive for a while.

It would still work out, as it would compute remaining miles based on your average MPG. It would still read 0 when you run out.

They could have at least made it reach 0 when you have 1-2 gallons left. 4-5 is way too much error.

I drove to Yellow Stone Nat Park from FLA round trip (with toy hauler, fully loaded) (I've got 10mpg on average, towing a trailer)

Well, in SD it was very windy, all sort of cross winds, felt like 50mph winds. It was getting late, and most of the places closed down for the day, due to wind. I had extra 5 gal canister with gas. After stoping many different gas stations, noticed that my light came on. As soon as light came on, I had about 40 miles to spare, and after I've noticed that there is no way find a gas station fast, ended up using that extra 5 gal of gas, and that saved me. And getting 8 miles to a gallon in bad weather really kills-u.

EDIT:
I don't think 4-5 gallons extra after light comes on, is a big deal... in my opinion, its not that big of error, its more like a safety.

My light comes on and I fill up and I get around 22-24 gallons into the tank. More often then not its 23 or 24 in there and that means after i get to 0 on the DTE meter that I'd still have at most 3 gallons in the tank.

Starting at 506 miles on the odometer I filled the tank and reset the mileage on my trip and my mpg calculator. Filled it up today at 810 miles with 19.93 gallons (304 on the trip). The low fuel message had been on for about 20 miles. That's very conservative if I truly have a 26 gallon tank.

304 miles / 19.93 gallons = 15.25mpg. The computer shows me achieving 15.2mpg. Can't ask for much more accurate than that. I have seen a few people in various posts say they don't trust the computer, are other people finding their computers are not as accurate as mine was this trip?

Mileage seems about what was expected to me considering I did 120 miles at 75mph, about 30 miles in town and the remaining 150 miles with five people in the truck, 4 snowboards in a cargo box on top (I would guess this would hurt the aerodynamics and mileage a bit) averaging 40-65mph on winding roads on the way up to the ski resort.

Can you provide some comparison between your computer and your own calculations. My meter is wayyyy accurate, seems strange that yours would be way off. It's a pretty simple calculation, the efi has to know exactly how much fuel it is spraying into the engine and the odometer should be very accurate as well. For the calculation to be way off either your fuel injectors are spraying more fuel than they think they are (which result in very rich fueling) or your odometer is way off. Now Toyota odometers are know for being off, but even if the odometer is not accurate, it's the same odometer you use when calculating the mileage yourself so that wouldn't explain the inconsistency either.

Odd.

so when you achieve this kind of m/p/g, do you drive with A/C on or off? (windshield defroster does turn your A/C on)

Thanks

A/C on. I am not using it but I keep forgetting to turn it off, every time I start the truck the climate control changes to auto mode and turns the A/C on. I think I turned it off for about 50 of those miles.
