SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the second generation 2008 and later Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "engine/ground noise on 2008 sequoia", within the Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Hi there- 20 year landcruiser owner and just bought 08 sequoia and have found an annoying noise and want you to see if you hear it too. I have duplicated it on my vehicle, another on the dealer lot, and another on a different dealer lot so it seems systemic. some have dvd/nav and some do not. The noise is a high pitch whine that comes from the passenger side dashboard speaker. (I know it as engine noise from my multi amp car stereo days) It happens at all speeds between 1800-2000 RPMs and with the radio on/off or the heater on/off. when i listen to the speaker with the radio off, i hear static/hiss in the speaker meaning the speaker is live when it shouldnt be (IMHO). Toyota basically said they hear the noise but can not diagnose/solve because not enough people have complained. Please listen and see if yours does the same. It is really annoying with cruise control on becasue it settles right in at 2000 RPMs and is constant! I have logged it with toyota corporate using the 800 number. Please check and report back!
I have about 1800 miles on my 08 LTD Sequoia and I only have the noise that you are describing when the AUX mode is selected and the IPOD/MP3 player that is connected thru the AUX jack is not powered up yet. Once the MP3 player powers up, the noise goes away, even if I shut the AUX device off or just turn it down. Oddly, the noise does not occur in my 07 Tundra with a device plugged into the AUX jack or in any other mode.
P.S.- The Sequoia has the NAV/JBL Synthesis audio system and the Tundra doesn't have the NAV, but has the JBL system.

Thanks...Mine has the JBL system with no nav and happens ALL the time. PLEASE call 800-331-4331 to file a complaint. Thats the only way they will address it. Thanks for the post!
You said you "listen to the speaker". Does that mean you're right next to it? The way you are describing it sounded like you were hearing it from drivers seat. I was driving today and tried stereo on and off and didn't hear anything, at any RPM. Then I tried with the radio in AUX mode with the IPOD plugged in and not powered on, like highmtn. I got nothing. I have a LTD and JBL with nav, but no high pitched whine, static, or hiss. Good luck.
thanks for the response....yes, when i am driving i hear the ground noise. i hear the hiss when i put my ear near the speaker. with the stereo off, there should be nothing....thanks again....

Just took delivery on my Plat Seq with JBL audio. I too hear the hissing. Easiest way to hear it is to just sit in the driver's seat with the key in the ignition. With the engine, radio and climate controls off, it is very easy to hear the hissing coming from the front right passenger speaker.
I will call the number above with my complaint. If others hear the hiss they should also call. I suspect it just needs a resistor added to a ground on that speaker to eliminate or substanitally reducing the hissing sound.
I did some further checking and there was no sound coming from the passenger speakers or the driver's speakers. I actually struggled to identifiy where the heck the relatively loud hissing sound is coming from, however I think I figured it out.
As soon as you put your key in the ignition, the DVD player for the GPS map "boots up" and continues running at a high speed. The sound is hard to track however if you open the Nav screen with the engine off (but key in ignition) as if to load a cd, you can very clearly hear what sounds like a hissing noise coming from the "whirring" of the DVD player as it resonates throughout the front center console. I doubt there's anything Toyota can do, given the location of the GPS map dvd player.
Hi there....good thought...but mine does not have navigation and neither did the other 2 that i "test drove" so that is NOT the issue. I do not want to detract from those who are experiencing the same problem as me from calling toyota as above.
I removed the passenger dashboard speaker to see if it went away and it was softer but still there....meaning that it is at least the whole right front channel of the audio system. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the 2008 Sequoia or at least know where the JBL amp/s are?
