SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the second generation 2008 and later Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Satellite Radio Question", within the Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Can anyone tell me where the antenna for the XM radio is mounted on the '08 Sequoia? I believe the tuner is mounted under the passenger seat. A picture is obviously worth a thousand words!
Seriously though, anyone have any idea where the antenna might be located? How conspicious would it be? Would it be body colored?
I heard they are on the dash next to the left speaker grille but people are not getting great reception because the wipers arms interfere a bit...let me know if you find it

I dont think thats where its located for sat radio. Only for Nav.
I will say that my stock head unit had what I believe is a sat radio antenna plugged in to the back when I removed it, yet I Didnt have the sat radio option, only ready...
I will say that the pioneer SUCKs at FM reception on thier AVIC D3x...
I did quite a bit of looking prior to purchasing my Sequoia and did not find any with it as a factory installed option. I had it installed by the dealer and did not specify where I wanted them to put the antenna. They put it right in front of the left side roof rack and ran the wire inside the black rubber trim just above the driver door. The antenna is about 1.25" x .75". It's hardly noticeable, and I have had no problems with reception. I think if you put it somewhere inside the passenger compartment (dashboard, windshield) at some point you are going to have issues with the roof of the vehicle blocking reception. This is from my experience using the portable XM in the car and putting the antenna on the dash. It worked OK but there was some loss of reception, where I have had none with the current setup on the Sequoia.
Thank you all for your responses. XM radio is available in the SET region as an option. Whether it is direct from the factory or Port installed is debateable -- I suspect it is port installed. The option code in the SET region is RX60. If the antenna was body colored (like you see the little boxes on the roofs of, say, Honda Accords), I would suspect it to be direct from the factory. On the sequoia, they are the small black square shaped antennas which are available on aftermarket units and hence, lead me to believe that they are port installed (though integrated through the factory system).
SET is NOTORIOUS for port installed options. For eg. they willfully don't order vehicles from the manufacturer with the factory rear entertainment system, so that they can instal their version, which looks factory (i.e matches the headliner), but is not and is not integrated into the factory NAV system etc. The unit is made by a Company called Invision Industries and the unit SET uses is the G10 model. This is why in the SET region you can also get an RES with a dual headrest DVD setup.
I tried my best to have my dealer preference a vehicle with the factory RES. He tried 4 different times (you can preference every 15 days) and never received an allocation. After waiting 10 weeks, I finally caved and accepted the port installed RES. I did an inventory search of the entire Southeast region and there was only ONE '08 Sequoia that had the factory RES and it was located in Alabama (I'm in NC) and didn't have the other options I wanted on my vehicle.
Downside to the port RES is (i) no integration with factory NAV (hence, no control from factory NAV and no picture upfront), and (ii) no direct audio link to factory system, its via an FM modulator. You also lose the 115V outlet. Only upside is that the screen is a bit larger than the factory unit -- 10.5" vs. 9". At the end of the day, the unit is for my toddler to watch Barney, so I accepted the hand that was dealt.
Its amazing how much clout the SET distributor has on the manufacturer because of the sheer volume they do -- I've heard that they do more volume that all the other 11 regions combined.
Sorry for my rant, but through this process I've learned that getting a Toyota vehicle the way you want it, especially in the SET region, can be a nightmare.
On a more positive note, I got a very fair price from the dealer. And I pick up car up this afternoon!! (fingers crossed that everything is as expected)

What a rip-off. I'm glad I'm not in the SET selling region. It seems surprising that Toyota would let this region treat their customers this way. If it were me, I'd give Toyota a rip-roaring evaluation in the post-purchase satisfaction survey. If enough customers did the same, maybe Toyota would cease this unscrupulous dealer behavior.
Here's a picture of the port installed RES. Sad part is that the dealers pass it off as a factory system and most consumers are clueless. The dealers say it is a Toyota system, which is, at best, a half truth, since the systems is from South east TOYOTA. I was quick to call out my dealer on this. Once they knew what i was talking about, they confirmed that it was port installed by SET.
Here is a list of all the options in the SET region, some genuine and others port installed by SET.

Here's the background on SET. Jim Moran the founder of SET was well respected (he passed away at the age of 88) -- as well, he should be. It was because of SET that Toyota was able to make an entrance into the USDM in 1968. Moran was a self made from nothing person. The recent SET activity is probably the result of what happens when an organization gets too large and has so much control over a manufacturer.
Here's a post I found from another forum when I was doing my background research on SET's role in the the buying process.
" Other car makers sell directly to dealers. Toyota sells through regional distributors to dealers, adding a level of cost, and fees. Toyota would love to ditch these middlemen, but they can't. Here in Florida and the Southeast states, we're served by Southeast Toyota Distributors, started by Jim Moran in the 1960's to sell Toyota in the US. He was already famous in Chicago as owner of Courtesy Ford. He also owns JM Lexus, #1 Lexus dealer in the US, where I bought my SC300. He was also responsible for coaxing Toyota to create Lexus, and formed AutoNation with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga, who founded Blockbuster Video. Southeast Toyota sells to over 160 dealers in the Southeast and represents 20% of Toyota's business. Due to these distributors, your Toyota may have useless Port Installed Options(PIO's) you may not want. Southeast Toyota adds the overpriced $250 "environmental coating" in the wheel wells called "Toyoguard" on most Toyota's, including Camry, Supra, Celica and MR2. So you are stuck with it, and other wasted admin fees. They tack on huge ad fees, too. Always ask to see the original Toyota invoice to verify these fees."
