Default 9 weeks and 3 days later she is here!!! (Updated with Pics)

Well, I finally picked her up on Friday afternoon -- '08 Platinum 4x4, Arctic Frost & Sand Beige interior. Put 400 miles on her this weekend!

I will post a thorough review after a few days, along with some pictures (once I get her all cleaned up...its been raining a good bit here). For now, I'll say that she is everything I hoped for....and then some. Drives like an absolute dream and really conceals her weight very well. I am still in awe that a 6000 lbs body on frame SUV can drive like this. I always knew all along that the powertrain and drivetrain were why I was buying this SUV. Well....in hindsight, how little I knew at the time about how true that would be. The 5.7L V8 moves this SUV effortlessly. It simply says "6000 lbs, whatever!!". The 6 speed tranny is a dream as well. Super smooth to where the shifts are almost imperceptible. I played a game with my wife where I made her close her eyes and while under light throttle, I asked her to tell me when she felt a shift.....she couldn't

I'm also very glad I made the stretch from Limited to Platinum. The adaptive suspension alone is worth the cost. Beside the drivetrain & powertrain, the suspension does a great job in controlling the weight of the vehicle. The adaptive suspension goes one step further. With the suspension set to sport, the truck does a great job of limiting body roll and eradicating the minor float sensation in Comfort mode -- with minimal impact on ride quality. The differences between settings are not that dramatic, but are definitely perceptible from behind the wheel. The reason the changes don't feel as dramatic (especially on short test drives) is because there isn't a dramatic deterioration in ride quality between Comfort and Sport. I think people tend to equate sport with harsh ride quality, in this case the word "controlled" is more befitting of the sport setting.

The Platinum has the 20" wheels and the ride quality is, honestly, excellent. Would the 18" wheel/tires drive even smoother? I'm sure they would, but I can tell you that if you are on the fence, don't hesistate on the 20" wheels. The ride quality is well above just acceptable. (guess I should caveat that by saying the Platinum has the adjustable suspension)

For anyone who needs the space and is on the fence due to factors such as interior quality etc. you really need to drive this rig to get a sense for how sophisticated it really is. What ultimately matters is utility and drive and this vehicle absolutely excels at both....period.

This thing really has a serious no. of gizmos. The owners manual is like a novel and that doesn't even include the supplemental NAV manual.

JBL Sound system is nice and sound quality is nicely weighted. Since the mids and center channel are on the dash, the soundstage is high....a lot higher than in most cars. I felt that the system had a tad bit more forward bias than I like....a bit more rear fill would be nice. The mid range is also slightly harsh, but will probably tame itself over time (or my ears will get used to them.....depending on which camp you fall under in the speaker break-in debate).

Sonar system is great and really makes a huge difference when parking in the garage.

Used the Laser Cruise control and it works very well. Drove 90 miles on the interstate without pressing the brake or gas pedal even once. I was on the fence on this option as I felt is was "unnecessary excess". Boy was I wrong, for $600, this option is an absolute steal. If you're stepping up to the Platinum don't sign your buyers order until you've checked this option box.

Only real complaint would be that the plastics (less so on the dash and more on the doors, pillars, hatch etc.) are too hard. They need a softer textured feel in order to be befitting of a $55k vehicle. Am I going to let that bother me? Not at all, the superiority of this vehicle in all other aspects simply relegates this issue to being an after thought for me.

The NAV system is definitely more difficult to use than in my Infiniti. That being said, with some patience and the owners manual, it can be mastered. Love the blue tooth integration as well. The SET RES system does look factory and did well in keeping my toddler engrossed for an hour (really trying to limit this activity, but it is a lifesaver when your child is screaming away). Sound quality is decent from the FM modulator. Didn't have any static issues. As I said on a previous thread, Factory RES would have been nice, but this one serves its purpose. I'll admit that the bigger screen is nice.

Had been reading all the edmunds reviews with the overall rating of 9.3 and felt that owners were just rating this vehicle positively because they owned one. I can now say with confidence that I am dead wrong. This vehicle does deserve a >9 rating.

Thats all at this juncture folks. More to come over the next few days.

Any info on actual 'out the door' cost?

Mileage observations?

(also, you mean '>9')

Right.. >9.0.

Out the door was $55,698 (including 3% tax, tag/title and SET admin fee).

Mileage has been around 16.1 mpg, including ~200 of the 400 miles being highway.

Options were as follows:

Platinum 4x4 - White Pearl paint, Laser, Cold Kit, DRLs, SET Rear Entertainment, XM Radio, Cargo Net & 7 pass floor mats.

Thanks for the info and write-up!

As much as I am drawn to the Platinum, when the time comes I (at this point, unless options change) will have to be going with the LTD since most of the reason for moving to this type of vehicle is for a flat cargo floor and that rear console in the Plat's just doesn't work for me.

Still think you will really like this vehicle. As I said earlier, the real strong suit of this new Sequoia is the Engine and drivetrain.

Since I was set on having a fully loaded vehicle (I tend to keep my cars for a while, usually 7-8 years, if not more) the differential between the limited and Platinum was about $2500. For the incremental cost I was getting the following:

-- Memory seats (which should be an option on the limited, can't believe it isn't),
-- Adjustable suspension,
-- Power Tilt & Telescope wheel (nice feature as it gets out of the way when the key is removed).
-- heated and air cooled front seats (could care less if they are air cooled, tried them out and the sensation was weird, almost like my rear end was going numb).
-- Console (would have been even more amazing if the console were removable).
-- option for the DLCC.

If the Platinum were available with an MSRP of $50K, such that buyers could close at transaction around ~$45K, this car would be a home run.

Vern, wasn't sure if you were aware that you can adjust both the forward/rear and left/right bias by using the audio button on the right side of the Nav screen. You can also adjust the low/mid/high ranges to your personal likely through this same set of audio menus.

Yep, was aware of the fader and balance adjustments. When I moved the sound rearward, I felt like I lost a good bit of low end punch i.e. mid-bass from the front stage. Nonetheless, I do have it set 1 level toward the rear. I have played with the bass/mid/treble settings and they do help in tweaking the sound, however, the system has a fundamental sound characteristic to it that is a byproduct of the speaker locations, drivers, and dsp processing that remains irrespective of the tweaking. Don't get me wrong, I do like the system, I was just mentioning a few of its characteristics.

As a side note, I am big into home hifi and have a fairly sensitive ear to music and sound quality in general, hence, the assessment.

There is a latch on the rear of the console that allows the top half to fold forward (180 degrees) and ends up being flat with the middle seats when they are folded forward. It is all flat from the back of front seats to the rear hatch. Problem solved!

My concern is with a bunch of large dogs getting their paws in those 'crevices' left when it is folded. I much prefer a large open expanse with as few gaps as possible.

That is why I am even considering it. Coming from a 300C as my daily driver (the ES is my wife's), I would have a very hard time going to a notably less powerful vehicle.

I use my protective cargo matt pulled up to the back of the front seats and this gives me a flat surface without gaps for my dog to play.
Anyway it works for us.

Default Re: 9 weeks and 3 days later she is here!!!

Today marks exactly 1 month since I picked up my '08 Sequoia Pltn. 4x4. Wife and I have logged a little over 1,300 miles during that time. A couple of follow-up observations - mainly areas for potential improvement.

1. Steering feel: A couple of publications have described the steering feel of the '08 Sequoia as being light and numb. I have to agree with at least the characterization of it being light, if not numb. The steering isn't numb like in the old GM days, where it was impossible to decipher what was going on at the front wheels, but it certainly isn't the model for road feel either. IMHO, a 20-25% increase in steering heft would go a long way in improving feel.

2. Fuel economy: The EPA ratings of 13/18 are very close to real life. Most of our driving has been city and our MPG has been right at 13.0. I've heard it improves over time. We shall see.

3. Interior:

Materials: Still feel that the interior materials and textures should have been softened to improve feel and eradicate the link to the vehicle's "truck roots". Examples of areas include, the plastics around the gear shifter and cups holders, area above the Rear climate controls and the plastics around the lower door panels. Besides just aesthetics, the downside of the hard plastics is that they scratch/mar relatively easily.

Backlighting: The backlighting of certain buttons on the dash such as the side view mirror controls and the memory seats/mirrors buttons (1, 2, SET) is conspiciously absent. I have to power fold the mirrors before I enter my garage and find myself fumbling for the button at night.

HVAC: Wish the system would allow the sync-ing of the driver and passenger side, in addition to the rear A/C i.e. dual zone syncing, in addition to tri-zone. The way it is currently configured you can only control (i) all three zones simulatenously, or (ii) all three zone independently. It would have been nice to control the two front zones together for two reasons - (i) you could then use the control button on the steering vehicle to increase or decrease the temperature for the front (driver and passenger) zones -- currently, you can only control the drivers side from the steering wheel, and (ii) It is really difficult to reach the passenger side temp knob from the drivers seat.

Other controls: The buttons on the far side of the NAV are hard to reach from the drivers seat. As often as the "Audio" button is used, it should have been placed on the left side of the NAV cluster.

4. Transmission: Shift quality, shift speed/smoothness and intelligence remain excellent. I had read an article (on CNN Money, I believe) where a tester mentioned that the 6 speed transmission hunts a lot. I can confirm that this is absolute rubbish. If I have to find something to gripe about, I would have preferred if the transmission display in S mode showed the actual gear that the vehicle is in as opposed to serving as a "top gear" selection display.

5. Engine: No issues at all. Power and smoothness remain very impressive. As I said before, from an acceleration and passing perspective, the powertrain and drivetrain make the vehicle's 6000lb weight simply meaningless. I have a 2003 Infiniti G35 (which weigh's ~3,600lbs) and, frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sequoia pips it in a 0-60 dash. Goes without saying that the pain for have this luxury occurs at the gas pump.

6. Fuel capacity: Despite a 26.4 gallon tank, the Fuel gauge and Fuel Econ computer reach at or near zero after utilization of only 22.5 gallons of fuel. Its really unnerving/difficult to ignore both the gauge and computer and tell yourself that you've got another 40-50 miles before you really run out of fuel. I know folks with Tundras have confirmed this and logic dictates that there is at least another 3 gallons of fuel in tank, but the fear of running out of gas eventually takes over. Range is barely 300 miles/tank in city driving.

7. Adjustable Suspension: I REALLY like this feature on the Platinum. For those that say they don't feel any difference between the settings -- they haven't spent enough time driving the vehicle to get a real feel for it. I mainly use Normal and Sport as the Comfort mode really introduces an old school Cadillac-esk float and disconnected feeling that I don't like....however, it will smother most bumps very effectively. I generally use the sport mode unless the road surface has a great deal of irregularities, which is when I switch to Normal. As I said previously, the sport mode does a great job of controlling body roll; so much so, that it almost tends to exaggerate the lack of steering heft. What would have been really great is if the steering feel firmed up when switching the suspension to sport mode (guess this isn't a BMW M model )

8. Bluetooth: Absolutely love the BT interface, works like a charm. Paired with an LG VX3000 (EnV), no issues at all, sound quality is great.

9. Voice commands: The voice commands are really a gimmick, the list of commands is limited and by the time one waits for the prompt and beep, its easier to just hit the desired button in the first place.

10. Wish List: Still really wish this vehicle came with an HID headlamp option. My G35 has it and I really miss it. The halogen lighting is good, but once you go HID, halogen just feels really "yellow". I won't consider a retrofit due to safety reasons and incompatability of optics.
PS: Please no comments about HID vs. Halogen, trust me, I've seen/read them all.

Also wish Smart Key was an option. The vehicle starter is effectively self cranking (i.e. if you just touch it and release, it will continue cranking till the engine fires) and it seems like implementation wouldn't be that difficult.

Still am very happy with the purchase. Just thought I'd share the finer observations.
