Default fuel gauge gremlin?

lemme tell you guys about a weird fuel gauge problem. i had slightly less than half tank of gas, so i went in for a automatic carwash. got the car back and i noticed the fuel tank was empty, the light was on, and the miles to empty says O miles. i freaked out, i thought maybe someone stole the gas while i was in the waiting area. so i quickly hauled *** to costco for a fill up. then on the way, bought 3 miles in, the fuel gauge slowly rises back to only a 1/4 tank, fuel light turns off, but the computer still says o miles to empty.

anywho, i ended up filing up 14.1 gallons, i hope it was just a freak thing, now iam scared to bring it to the local wash.

has anyone ever had this happen to their sequoia/tundra??

thanks
bj

I had the same problem which was covered under warranty to replace fuel gauge-float. Works fine now.

I had the recent issue with my fuel gauge going to zero, then back slowly. I investigated this issue and found that the new technology used in the fuel sensor sometimes gets a build-up which causes the problem. I simply used a fuel additive/ cleaner...complete system not just fuel injector cleaner. Chevron cleaner with Techron with a tank of gas. The problem stopped. If the fuel gauge goes to zero and never returns the sensor is more than likely broken and will need replaced. The "returning read" just try the fuel cleaner.
Chevy and some Fords had the same issue. Same repair.....it's worth the 7$ to at least try.

Any reason why you didn't take it to the dealer and have them address it right from the start? It might serve you well in the future to have the dealer record the issue on your vehicle so that when it continues to happen its not just your word against there's as to the frequency of the issue.

My new 2008 Limited has a slightly different problem with the fuel gauge. The manual says that the gas tank holds 26 gallons but despite the gauge being on Empty and the computer saying that I only have 2 miles left before I run out of gas, I can only put 21 gallons of gas in the tank. It must have a problem with the sender in the tank or a problem with the gauge itself. Has anyone had the same problem? I have a service appointment so the dealer can look at it, but I'd like to be informed before they try to fix it.

This is a known fact with the Tundra and becoming apparent with the '08 Sequoia as well. My vehicle does the exact same thing. Do a search for fuel gauge on the Tundra forum and you'll see what I mean. Doubt the dealer will be able to do anything for you.

Ok, so I decided to get ballsy on my last tank of gas as the math simply didn't make sense vis-a-vis a 26.3 gallon tank.

I drove with the fuel gauge warning light on and the "Low Fuel" warning on the info cluster active for a good bit. I also drove about 15 or so miles past the point when the "Distance to empty" said zero. My average econ was ~13.1mpg. As such, playing it safe, I computed that 24 gallons should get me to about 314 miles.

After willfully ignoring (i) the fuel guage, (ii) fuel indicator lamp, (iii) low fuel warning, and (iv) distance to empty, the pucker factor became too much and I pulled into a gas station. I finally drove 297 miles before filling up. Still was only able to pump 23.083 gallons of gas into the tank. At $3.899/gallon, cost me $90 exactly.

While the warnings were clearly premature for regular driving, I can somewhat see why the safety margin is this high for a vehicle that can tow 10,000 lbs. Think of it this way, assume you are pulling a 7,500lb load on a mild grade, you'll probably be averaging 8-9 mpg. Assuming that the warnings start to go off with 4.3 gallons of fuel left (22 gallons used), you would mathematically have about 30-38 miles or so before you completely run out of gas. This is about the average warning in a normal car.

I've basically told the wife that if the average econ reads 13.0mpg or above, she can basically wait till the odometer hits 300 miles before filling up, irrespective of the gauge and warnings. Knowing my luck, I'll probably get a call on my cell indicating that she's run out of gas, even though mathematically she shouldn't!
