To Custom Order OR not to Custom order A SEQUOIA?!!
That's the question.....

1) I wonder if any of the readers have gone through this experience and what the experience is/was like..
2) Any additional cost/costs?
3) What's the wait time? 1, 2 or 3 months?
4) Dealers experience...which State? Any Gulf State Toyota (GST) Dealers to recommend? If the name can't be said, pls mention the city &bstate at a minimum...

Thank ya all

In this market, I wouldn't even consider it. Shop around- you're sure to find the options you want in a vehicle on the lot. You can get excellent deals on any large suv right now- toyota included. If you special order, you'll pay msrp.

The only time I would special order a vehicle is if inventory was scarce and I couldn't find the vehicle I wanted within a couple hours drive. I almost did order a FJ Cruiser when they first came out and dealers couldn't keep them in stock, but instead waited 2 years and got an excellent deal once gas went over $4/gallon locally.

What trim model and option are you looking for?....If you go to TOYOTA website you can do a build your own vehicle and most of the time Toyota website will lead you to a dealer who has that trim model and option you are looking for.Sequoia's has alot of options also..

Actually, you CAN negotiate on factory orders. You also get whatever incentives are available at time of delivery. However, it is indeed easier to negotiate with vehicles already on the lot.

What I was trying to say is there's no need to wait, and no need to order. Sequoias are plentiful, and sales are slow. You should have NO trouble finding one on a lot that is equipped exactly how you want, and you can negotiate a MUCH better deal on a vehicle that is already in the dealer's inventory.

Good Luck

Good points from all. I brought a Tundra from my dealer because he had it on his lot, in everything I wanted, color, grade, and just had 2 extra's added ( rear camera and chrome tube rails). A few months later after the new Sequoia came out, my wife and I customed ordered one exactly the way we wanted it. Waited about 7 weeks for it.If your going to spend $50- $60K, you might as well get what you want and not settle for something you don't like. But do look on dealer lots first and see if there is something out there you like, BTW we got the Sequoia in cassis pearl, its beautiful.

This is a common misconception, There is no way to custom order a vehicle. What dealers do is take down what you want and simply wait for the right car to come along. Back a couple of years ago they were selling so many cars it was just a matter time before your car was built. Now with slow sales and because they are discontuing the Sequoia you may be out of luck on that.

Um yea, have you not noticed that they still have not resumed production of Sequoia's? Not even a hint of whats to be expected for 09 or 10 And its Jan. Ford did the same thing when the excursion expired.

The end of the line is quiet. You dont want to advertize that you couldnt sell a whole model of a car. No profit, No Line. Why build cars to give them away?

Unless someone has heard from Toyota that the Sequoia is returning I assume its dead.

My experience has been different regarding ordering a vehicle. The order is placed and can be tracked and the vehicle will be delivered, as ordered, in X amount of time (last one took four weeks...that was about three years ago). I tend to disagree that the Sequoia will no longer be produced but that is just my opinion.

Let me clarify,

They will produce continue to produce the Sequoia however, it will be exported to everywhere but here. The exporting story is substatianted through Toyota. I believe that they wont sell it here.

I believe you are mistaken on the demise of the Sequoia in North America. I think just the opposite is true. In fact, I believe the Land Cruiser and LX570 will be dramatically reduced globally and replaced with the more modern and up-to-date independent rear suspension platform of the Sequoia.

Toyota has a major capital investment in 2 new plants in the US that need to be capitalized over more units than are currently being sold due to the decline in the US auto market. My guess is that the LC/LX platform has been fully depreciated (they are made in Japan) and my further guess is they will be slowly killed off or at least reserved to Asian markets with the Sequoia being the only full size Toyota suv platform sold in the Western Hemisphere. Here's an Oct 2008 press release from Toyota on the subject Toyota Vehicles : Sequoia / Toyota

In fact, the Sequoia was one of the few models in the Toyota lineup that had growth in units sales during 2008. The Scion Xd had signficant growth (+151%) however it was a relatively new model in 2008 with limited sales in 2007.

The Land Cruiser was up 16.5% in 2008 however it had relatively insignificant sales with only 3801 units sold in 2008. Likewise the LX570 had growth of +220% however the units sales were also quite insignificant at 7915. In total Toyota sold less than 12,000 units of the LX/LC platform in the US. Given the $ vs Yen exchange rate on these Japanese made models and the cost to import them, they may very well have lost money on each unit sold, even at the exhorbitant price they charge for the LC and LX ($65-80K).

The only real significant "star" in the entire Toyota lineup and that includes Lexus, was the Sequoia with a unit sale increase in 2008 of +31.5% and a total units sold of 30,693.

Of the North American made Toyota products, only the Sequoia (+31.5%) and the Camry (+2.1%) had more units sales in 2008 than 2007.

There were no imported Toyota models that sold more in 2008 than they did in 2007.

Based on Year end numbers for 2008, the Sequoia was the only high volume model with any growth and its not surprising they will likely look to replace the LC/LX platform in South America to take advantage of the manufacturing proximity of the Sequoia made in the US.

As an interesting side note, the Prius unit sales were down -12.6% with approx. 159,000 umits sold in 2008. The scary number for Toyota is the fact that only 7800 units were sold in Dec 2008 or an annual run rate of 94,000 units. If Toyota doesn't turn these Prius numbers around, their flagship hybrid will be looking at a 40% reduction in units sold in 2009.

So much for the death of the full size SUV and its replacement by hybrids like the Prius. The Prius has always been a poor economic decision which became even worse when gas dropped to $1.50.
