My wife and daughter have horses and we have a 3 horse trailer that weighs 3400lbs. We are looking at an 08 Sequoia Limited and wanted to know how this will handle the load. I figure the total weight with trailer, 2 horses and add-ons will be around 6000-6500 lbs. I hate to say that we currently tow with a 2008 Ram 2500 Diesel but have had more problems than I care to mention. My wife really wants to get back into an SUV and the Sequoia's towing specs impress me. I have seen a couple reviews on towing but not a lot. Thanks for any input.
I have a tundra 5.7 SR5 double cab and use a gooseneck hiden hitch and tow about 10000 - 12000 on it and does really good. I think you are going to be happy with a 5.7 for sure.
I live in Cumming GA
I use my Sequoia to tow my Jeep, weighs in about 6500 lbs on the trailer. I live in Colorado, and the higher you go, less oxygen, which means less HP. Probably about a 1/3 less about 10k feet than at sea level. I can pull all the passes at the speed limit, although at the very steepest sections, I can't go 5 over. This speed is fast enough to pass the majority of vehicles on the road. I typically average about 12 mpg.
One issue I have found that when I am on the flatlands and above 70 mph the tranny will not shift out of 4th and the gas mileage drops to single digits. I don't normally tow where the speed limit is 75 mph so I can't comment if this is normal, the altitude (4k to 5k feet) or engine load. Comparing my fuel costs with my friends with diesel trucks, it is about a wash when factoring in the higher cost of diesel. Another point worth mentioning is the brakes are phenomenal, some of the best I have ever driven. Really impressive how quickly I can stop 13k lbs of mass (with dual axle trailer brakes) when towing.
There were many factors I considered when buying a Sequoia over a diesel truck, but the most notable are the lower maintenance and fuel costs, and the fact we can fit 8 in the vehicle. We use the power rear seats several times a week depending on how many kids we are hauling around.
I tow a 28' 4550# dry camping trailer. Tows great. Probably around 5500-6000# loaded with water and gear. Never met a hill or speed limit that wasn't easily doable with power to spare. I have towed all over Colorado and out to DC. Great vehicle. Very stable tow, but I also have a hensley arrow WD hitch, so that might be a good part of the stability. It did seem a bit bouncy in the rear when I first got it, but that hasn't been a problem recently.
Sounds like I don't have a thing to worry about especially since my wife doesn't drive very far when trailering (<100 miles). I was also wondering if the rear self leveling suspension is needed. Do you guys have that? Thanks for all the info.
I tow two different trailers, 07 fleetwood avalon and 16' flat ATV trailer with 6 ATVs on it. I always have to have the kids look back and make sure the trailer is there. Once I thought I would be able to outsmart the sequoia and not turn on the tow/hual switch. it returned very bad gas milage in response. I didnt do that again.
I am going to buy a huge friggen toyhualer and and other triailers i can find just to tow with this thing.
BTW dont even sweat the rain or snow. This truck is crazy. Good thing for us that have bought them is that not a lot are being sold and produced so resale value will maintain, also because i aint ever selling mine!!
sandforblood: I will be using the truck for towing ATV's as well. I currently have a 2 place but need something bigger so was looking at the Triton ATV168 aluminum. What trailer do you have?

What does the tow button do? Thanks Should I use it if I tow two motorcycles (1200lbs on a flat 8x12 open trailer).
It changes the shift points on the tranny. It holds gears longer and does not shift into 6th gear. I wouldn't use it until you are towing at least 4k-5k lbs. When I tow a 18ft. flat bed empty (~1.5k lbs) I can hardly feel anything behind the Sequoia.
One more question. Is the load-leveling suspension really necessary? All the Limiteds in this area don't have it. Don't want to go with the Platinum since I like the 8 person capacity.
You will have no problems. I've pulled my flatbed trailer with 5 atv's on it. Around 5k-6k weight. No problems. Pulled my camper trailer, 12.5k pounds. No problems. I recently got the supercharger and anticipate no problems pulling anything that I can put on my bumper.
