Aside from the steering wheel, what is the big advantage over the applique? I have the port installed applique and it looks just like mine as far as I can tell from your pics. Maybe I should post some pics of mine. It is much cheaper and no down time. I must be missing something....

Take a look through post #1. Tried to address the differences. Its one of those, "you get what you pay for" type of deals......I wanted my vehicle done in a manner that I deemed appropriate and, hence, i was willing to pay the premium in order to do so. Others might be ok with the applique....which is fine too. I paid over $50K for this vehicle and this was the look I wanted and, as such, I was prepared to put in the time and effort to achieve it.
Thanks for the detail and all the pics. I've been looking at doing the same thing in my Tundra but had concerns about how it would ultimately turn out. I can see from your pics that it does indeed turn out beautiful.

You're welcome. The idea behind documenting my process was so that others could learn from it. As I said from the start, I too was not sure how the end product would ultimately turn out. I had a general idea in my mind at inception and I think the end result has more than met my expectations.

It's the customization that is key! The little things we know we do and if someone someday notices it, then we grin knowing why we did it!

I'm drooling all over my keyboard now..... did you paint the little rings on the cluster?
No. The rings around the instruments were as they are stock. I just removed them for the hydrographic print process and reinstalled them once the parts came back.
The only part that I painted was the 4WD switch. You'll see that its mostly black as opposed to silver.
well crap. i looked and saw woodgrain and thought 80s stick on stuff...then i read the entire thread and looked at the pics...cant believe i like it as much as i do. it looks great. the part where u molded the seam looks awesome....should be that way from toyota. i probally woudlnnt have done the black knob but its ok either way.
it looks great with our interior color....but i had a thought...for gray or black interior....wonder if that guy could do an ebony wood like my wife's benz has...she has black interior with ebony trim from factory and ive always loved it...
The vendor that did the work for me is called DMB Supply. They are based out of Hernando, FL. The place is owned by a father and son team, Mick (Father) and Bill (Son) Vargo. I spoke with both of them, but mostly dealt with Bill. Great guy.....very accomodating and upfront about what he can and cannot do. As you've seen from my previous posts, we went through several samples before I settled on the look that I wanted. He also sent me a leather swatch for the steering wheel, so there would be no match issues, after the fact.
I know folks are keen on pricing info, but again, its not fair to the vendor to disclose specifics, so just go with the range I highlighted earlier. Additionally, pricing is on a part-by-part basis, so if you decide to do more pieces or less pieces, that would affect the cost. Steering wheel was the most expensive piece. If you take a look at their website, you'll see their process (which includes a urethane molding of the area to be coated) and its evident as to why its the most expensive....its the most labor intensive.
They have done tons of these (Sequoias and Tundras) and, hence, could probably do this in their sleep. Bill did mention that my lower cluster piece was the first he had done with the seam filled in and that it came out really nice. He applied additionally layers of clear coat and buffed them to ensure that there was no chance of the seam showing.
I also had the trim piece that goes around the shifter done in a black paint (which was then clear coated) as opposed to the wood. Once painted, the entire piece was clear coated. I will highlight this when I get some more detailed pics posted.
Turnaround time was faster than I anticipated. I think Bill knew that I was excited and so I suspect he worked to turn things around as quickly as possible.....again, great customer service.
Anyway, thats all the major info. Will try to answer one-off questions.
Thanks for you interest.
07DC,
If you go to the link in his post above, click on "water transfer printing" to the left, then go to the bottom of the page, and click on the link to "learn more about the process". This takes you to watertransferprinting.com or something similar and they have nearly 100 different colors and patterns of the wood grain. I'm sure you should be able to find something close.
Looks real nice Vern. It should definitely be an option from the factory.
