Default How to initialize power rear door

So.. the day after I took delivery of my 2008 Sequoia (Limited), the power rear door (liftgate) stopped working. Could not even open it manually as it appears the lock does not release. Dealer replaced the motor.

So now, a month later, it happens again. But this time, I'm traveling with luggage. Loading thru the rear window is not exactly easy...

The manual says the door should be initialized... but its not clear. Nothing is happening when I push the switch to manually open the door.

Anyone know how to initialize it, or at least get the door to open? Perhap's it's not an initialization...?

Sounds like your motor failed again. Initializing usually means holding down the button for 3-5 seconds on whatever function needs to be initialized. Stuff usually only needs to be initialized after the battery has been disconnected though.

I am guessing your motor failed again. I have already had to replace my locking mechanism for the rear hatch.

joined this forum to find out about this problem too.

here's what i found out, using a sienna guide.

i took the battery off for 5 minutes just to be safe.
reconnected it. closed all the doors and trunk.
started the sequoia, and pressed the lift gate open and close a few times.

i needed to re-initialize the trunk because i use the OEM back up camera harness inside the truck to tap into for my back up camera. i disconnected the lift gate harness and tapped power, and video feeds there.

i have installed 4 9" dvd monitors with built in dvd(so they all are master dvd). rear back up camera, front camera, pioneer avic-z1 with the z3 upgraded drive. steering wheel controls.JBL audio interface, xm nav-traffic, bluetooth. compustar pro paging alarm remote starter.

i will start a thread later on all the mods done to this truck, from head to tail :P

Just got back from a long trip and dropped off to dealer. Have to hand it to them for being honest... the tech managed to get the door to work - but did not know how. Then it failed again - while still in their hands. Toyota has suggested they replace the ECU for the rear door. The rear window was also buggy and that ECU controls that as well. They're not sure if this will resolve, but its a step that needs to be tried. Hopefully, the part will be in their hands mid next week...

Well, it wasn't an ECU... next suggestion from Toyota is replacement of a wiring harness... this is getting interesting. Frustrating, too...

I have a 2008 4wd Platinum Sequoia. In addition to the read door activation button on the knee section of the driver's dash, there's also a separate door power button that can be pressed to turn the power off or on to the rear door. This button is also on the driver's knee section of the dash nearest to the steering column. Is it possible you simply have the power button turned off and that's why the power rear hatch door isn't functioning? Its worth checking if you haven't already.

Just out of curiosity is toyota doing anything in reguards to a months payment for your issues and what kind of vehicle did they give you to drive while its in the shop? BMW has made three payments on my wifes car because of turbo and fuel pump issues.

It's not the power button. Even the techs verified the weirdness - door will work - then stop working... The last time it worked (for me), I was at the airport and the door opened halfway, stalled, then opened completely. Did not close with power. Same way with the rear window. Last time I used it - it refused to close. I had to drive with it down (opened all other windows to keep fumes out)... then, after 20 minutes, it closed up. I don't dare to open it again.

As for what they are doing in terms of payments - nothing. I decided to keep it in the shop for the first repair attempt (it's car #3 in a 2 driver household and we also have an Mercedes ML for SUV duty). The vehicle is drivable - just not fully functional in terms of the power door. I can at least unlock and manually open the door - so it is usable. The wiring harness is in - just have to schedule an appt. I am basically a very patient guy when it comes to repair times - this Sequoia replaced a 1995 Range Rover Classic...you want to talk about extensive (month at a time) shop stays... My patience does have its limits... as I bought the Sequoia counting on a few years without any shop/repair visits.

If for some reason it continues to fail (after many attempts by Toyota)... what recourse do I have - Lemon Law?
