Default Sequoia 2008 4WD

Everytime I shift to 4WD, when the wheels start rolling, I heard a grinding sound from the front axle. I brought it to the dealer for them to check. The tech who rode with me admitted that the sound is not normal. He said he would check with another Sequoia to see if it has the same sound. The other didn't have that sound. He then called Toyota engineering dept. and they said the later model does not have the sound, but since mine was the earlier model, the sound is normal. I don't buy it at all, since it's really lound. Any thought? Is anyone out there with 08 Sequoia has the same problem? Should I bring it to a different dealer to get a 2nd opinion?

Thanks in advance.

I have an '08 and there's no grinding when engaging 4wd. Virtually no noise at all at lower speeds, at higher speeds there's an audible low "clunk" and that's it. I've had many other 4wd trucks and experienced no grinding. I'd get another opinion.

It sounds like your engaging the four wheel drive while stopped. Then when you start moving your hearing the grinding sound. How long does this sound last? Could it just be the drive gears engaging so it last for a split second only or does it last for longer than that? I have never experienced and grinding of gears when switching to 4 wheel drive.

Return it to the dealer and demand it be fixed.

If I'm in neutral and shift into 4WD and the 4WD dash light light goes solid, there's no engagement noise. Problem is that half the time the 4WD light flashes and when I put it in Drive there is an audible clunk of front engagement and then the 4WD light goes solid. This phenomena is probably the only complaint I have of my Sequoia. My old POS Expedition had a much smoother system IMO. If I detected grinding I'd be going back to the dealer but I'm not overly impressed with this system so far. I have an extensive technical paper on the driveline process, I'll see if I can find the link and post it.

It doesn't matter whether I shift to 4WD when fully stop or while driving. As soon as I shift to 4WD(when the wheels start rolling), the grinding sound comes on right away. It last as long as it was still in 4WD mode.

Thanks for the advice. I defenitely will bring it to a different dealer for another check.

I have a 08 sr5 4x4 and do not have that grinding noise at all. Also happy to say that while taking out the Seq to sand hollow utah last weekend, it was well worth it to be able to yank out my brothers tundra from the sand with no problem at all switching to 4x low

My 08 LTD does NOT have any grinding sounds in 4wd. I use the hi-range at least 10 miles a month and no odd noises at all. I would go back to the dealer. Good luck.
