Default 2010 Sequoia Platinum questions

I just test drove a 2010 Sequoia Platinum yesterday and we really like it. I had a few questions I wasn't really clear about.

Can 87 Octane be used?

Is the RSES on the Platinum factory installed? Can it be controlled by the front head unit?

How is the iPod integration? Can you navigate through the Playlists on the Nav screen? I'm just wondering to how it compares to a BMW's iPod integration on a Nav screen.

How are the air springs/load leveling? Do these only work when the car is stationary? Can you actually notice a ride height difference?

Where is the NAV dvd located? Under the driver seat?

Thanks for any answers....

I have an 08 platinum. Assume the one you tested was a flex fuel version. I may be wrong but I think FFV's give you the "option" to use E85, I think 87 would be fine.

The RSES I believe is factory installed. I had individual dvd's put in each headrest by the dealer, these will not play on the front nav screen, and even the RSES installed one will not let you control it without some sort of override installed (lockpic or similar) I think the factory installed RSES is a single drop down screen, however mine is an 08 so it may have changed.

Search here but I think the general concensus is the ipod integration is not good. I don't believe you can scroll through on the nav screen. I don't have an ipod though.

The ride height / load leveling only works when stationary or I believe less than 10 miles an hour, maybe 5mph? I haven't had any use for it in my 28k miles.

The NAV dvd in mine is located in the changer behind the screen. Not sure if there is a different changer in the 10'. In any case if you do pull the trigger on a sale I would look at the date and version on the nav dvd. Make sure your salesman gets you the latest dvd, if available. If he says its not available have him take you to a camry or other vehicle w/ nav to see what version is in it, if he's a good salesman he will swap it if it is newer.

Haven't had any complaints. It is a great vehicle. I keep my toyota's a long time so paying a little more for the platinum was worth it to me, good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply.

More questions for you-

They have a standard fuel only version 5.7 liter (non-ffv), fyi. That's what i'm looking at, a 2WD, and am wondering if 87 would work fine with it.

Is there an ONLINE owner's manual for the 2010 I could read??? That would answer a lot of my questions.

Is the NAV voice activated? Is there voice activation for the bluetooth phone connectivity or radio controls?

Can you play the RSES through the cabin's 14 speakers??

5.7L engines take 87 octane fuel.

nav is okay, not very user friendly. i'm not sure about voice commands. i don't use it that much.
phone can use voice commands, but i haven't programmed mine

air suspension is gone, the platinum has adjustable stiffness shocks, ie... sport, normal, etc... modes

To check if it has voice guidance, go into Setup -> Voice -> and then see if you can see a 'Voice Recognition Guidance' button at the bottom. You should be in the same menu where you adjust the Nav voice loudness. If the option is there, turn it on and you will be in business.

I learned this by watching the 4Runner DVD Nav video on Toyota.com. I'm pretty sure the Sequoia would have this, but I wanted to verify.

The RES does play through the 14 speakers as well as the wired and wireless headsets. The RES only plays video on the dash display if you are in Park and the parking brake is on. There are aftermarket devices that you can install to watch RES DVDs on the dash while driving (illegal in most states).

87 octane works fine here in CA. Only the TRD Supercharged Sequoia needs to use premium gas.

The NAV unit is only fully functional when you are stopped. This is a "safety" feature apparently decided by Toyota legals. When driving most of the NAV buttons are deactivated, which is very annoying if the front passenger wanted to use the NAV system. Again, there are aftermarket devices discussed on this forum that you can add on to override this deactivation.

The NAV does have voice activation, but it is not user friendly and takes you through a long menu of choices to get addresses inputted. It is useful for short phrase input like "nearest fast food" , "go home" or "nearest hospital", but inputting an address via voice is very tedious.

There are aftermarket NAV head units that are much more user friendly and functional than the stock JBL unit.

Thanks, I was planning on getting that override device, but I wanted to make sure the RSES was factory installed since I heard that some of them are not here in the SE, but maybe that is just on non-Platinum models.

Can you tell me if the video AND audio input on the RSES will go to the front screen and 14 speakers when parked?

How about that hybrid DVD everyone is talking about? Has anyone tried combining the 5.1 firmware with the latest DVD navigation disc on the 2010s to enable the 'Override' secret menu button? Seems like this would be a much easier solution (and cheaper) to override...

Air ride is still Available on the platty, I have a 10, so I know..
Not available on the other two though..
The DvD unit is factory and it is seperate from the head unit.
The Upper setting on the air ride only works off road in 4wd or when you are less than 5 or 10 Mph. Either or..

The video will go to the head unit through the RCA jack on the RES control panel, but the audio must go through the "AUX" input directly on the head unit to work through the 14 speakers.

the specs for the suspension on the platinum are as follows:

this is the rear suspension spec for the platinum off toyotas website:

Front high-mounted coil-spring independent double-wishbone front suspension with low-pressure gas-filled shock absorbers and hollow stabilizer bar; rear coil-spring independent double-wishbone with low-pressure gas-filled shock absorbers and hollow stabilizer bar and Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension (H-TEMS)

the H-TEMS system is not air ride, (or load leveling) it is the adjustable firmness suspension

I test drove a 2010 Platinum on Sunday. I am pretty sure it has some kind of rear suspension raise and lower capability. The switches looked like this (disregard the custom burlwood around the switches!).

Also, with the 2010 Platinum, can I just use the white usb cable that came with my iphone to play and control it through the factory stereo, or is a special cable needed?

Also, since the factory RSES is standard on the Platinum, does it come with the two cheap wireless headsets?

Thanks again for answering these questions. The salesperson who demoed the vehicle to me didn't know jack about it- I actually knew more about it than he did, and that's not saying much.

well i guess if it had the up/down toggle switch to the far right and the manual button below it, then it must have the air ride.

the H-TEMS suspension is the dial to the left with the sport, comfort,... selections

i thought on the 2010 limited air ride was standard like it was on the '08, i did not realize this until I got it home, and it was not there oh well. i am just going to throw some firestone airbags on there for when i tow.

Hey acribb,
Just bought one of these this week and am trying to keep it a secret from my wife. Christmas present. The RSES does come with those cheap feeling headphones. I had my dealer order a couple more just so I would have them for my kids friends and whatnot.
I too am interested in the override thing so I will keep checking on that.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this as well... Your iPhone will connect via bluetooth to the stereo in that Platinum and stream music wirelessly. You can have your iPhone connected as a phone and an audio player and it connects automatically any time you come close to your car. You can be standing 20 feet away and control your stereo with the iPhone. I had a salesman tell me that it was not possible, and what do you know... it is.

So to answer your question... leave the cable at home.
