Hi all,
Please let me know if my experience is typical...
I purchased a new 2007 AWD Sienna last summer. Last week the weather started to get nasty in Portland, Oregon so I went to Les Schwab Tire and purchased a set of wheels with studded tires.
I did not want to purchase the tpms sensors (for an extra $400), I figured I could check the pressure myself; I always have. I was told that I had to purchase them because Les Schwab would be liable if they were to install wheels knowing that the low pressure light would be ON all the time.
I asked if there was any calibration, I had to do; I was told there was a RESET button and they would do it.
I got the new tires on and the warning light went off. When I got home I put the old tires in the garage and then drove to get gas about a block from my house the warning light came on. I stopped and check all 4 tires. Thy were all 40psi.
Returned to Les Schwab and they tested the tires and were all perfect.
After many calls to Toyota the problem appears be be that wheels cannot be changed without TOYOTA resetting the computer with the correct serial numbers of the TPMS units. Broadway Toyota quoted me $88. That is for every time I change tires! I usually put my studs on 4-6 times in a year.
That is an additional $1000/ year for winter tires. PLUS the hassle of making an appointment bringing it in yada yada.
There has to be a better way. This was not very well thought out.
My plan now is to return the sensors to Les Schwab, after all, they are not doing any good the way they are. The light is ON all the time so they must be liable if I roll it
