Default 2010 Oil Filter?

So this engine has one of those cartridge type filters? I have no experience with this type. Can someone provide a pdf of how to change it? I see folks selling "kits" on ebay with various parts and o rings just to change a filter. I was wondering what I have to buy...I plan on using OEM filters from a dealership. Just don't know what to buy at this point, that is all.

thanks,
Joe

The OEM filter comes with the o-rings and the plastic drain spout. You will need to get the correct size cup style filter wrench. Most dealers should also sell the cup wrench.

Angry Re: 2010 Oil Filter?

If you buy the NAPA Gold (Wix) filter you get everything you need for the change.

My problem is I got it all a part, messy, but not hard. Now I cannot get it back together!!

I looks like a simple just screw the filter body into the filter housing, but for some reason I just cannot make it go. It will seem to catch the thread fine, but then only goes about 3/4 of a turn and stops ... hard ... I don't want to try and force it, I must assume there is some "magic" trick to get the thing started.

Any help appreciated.

Angry Re: 2010 Oil Filter?

Changed mine yesterday on the 5.7L 2010. Don't have diagram or pics.

First of all the skid plate must be taken off. It has 6 14mm metal bolts recess mounted into the skid plate and 3 phillips head screws on the skid plate attaching skid plate to lower front plastic bug shield.

Once removed, the filter canister is located on driver's side front lower with screw cap facing downward. Oh, filter is a $7 cannister filter you can buy at WALMART. Oil is 0-20W or 0-30W (alt) you can also buy at Walmart, about 8 qts @ 5qts / $23 but $6 plus by the qt.

You need a Oil Filter Cap Wrench that they say you can only get from a specialty tool store. But...I went to autozone and bought one for $6.99. It is a 14 sided Type "B" wrench that attaches to a 3/4 ratchet drive. I don't have a caliper to measure it but it is probably around 65mm which is the oil wrench size to fit other Toy. filters.

Fram Vers. of cannister filter comes with 2 O-rings to replace existing O-rings and a plastic filter drain dohicky that you can drain oil out of filter only for some reason.

Really got to have the cap wrench because Toyota made the filter a plastic finned contraption that looks like it could easily break apart. By the way, my first change was a little tight to unscrew as well and put back on.

I'm not going to tell toyota what I think about this oil change stuff but someone definitely should. They could have easily made the oil change easy for novice weekend mechanic but nooooo! they have made it a pain in the bohunkus so that customers will come back to the dealership for the $80 oil change.
