Angry Suwiii...suwiiii...ssuuuwwiiiii...

Hi there all! Let's get started. First of all, I own a Previa, S/C series, '97 - last year this model was made before they transferred to the Sienna; just hoping that maybe some of yous may have had this problem.
The problem has for about the past year been quite progressive; once upon a time my car started making noises, sounds that only had occurred when it were not fully warmed up yet - approximately 15-25 minutes into a cold start. FYI: this disfeature has not inhibited any of the performance of the vehicle, only made things quite annoying. These noises sound like belt going around and around - suwweeiii...suwwiiii...suuwwiiiii. like that . got no clue, AT ALL!

As well, this only had occured when the engine is at near idle levels and is quickly overtaken when the engine is revved. YET, for the past couple of weeks, the car seems to have this problem more often - as this usually does not happen all of the time (60 do/40 don't) - and when it does it doesn't seem to end as the engine warms up.

The reason why I have asked you guys is I have uncommonly witnessed the same exact problem with the more modern and less commonly seen earlier models of the Sienna.

This sounds like a belt-issue of some sort and would like expert and more especially, from those who have had this problem in the past.

Thanks, D5

Sounds to me like the serpentine belt. I'm no expert, but it happened to me too. It started on the cold mornings, but it would go away after engine warms up. Then it got worst. I've got it replaced under warranty, so I'm not sure how it looked on the inside when they pulled it out. I think it streched...

Try that first.

Mike

for a minute there, i though this was going to be a hog calling contest farmer thread.

yes, it does sound like a belt, could be the serpentine, or another, i dont know if the previa only uses just one belt for all. in either case, sounds like there is not enough tension on the belt. now if your belt is over 3 y/o or has more than 60k miles on it, just replace the damn thing for piece of mind. it might be old and brittle and not neccisarely show visual signs of cracking yet.

ps no i dont know how to spell.

Could it be the S.A.D.D shaft. The previa SADD shaft is know for squealing.(Equipment driveshaft)

I am brand new to this site. I have a '92 Previa with 216K - and lately the engine has sounded much louder during even mild acceleration. The Toyota service department thought it might be the SADD shaft. Would the SADD shaft make everything louder on acceleration? What other problems would a worn out SADD shaft cause? I'm not a mechanic...just wondering how much money to put into our 14 year old car at this point...it's been a great care, but they want $1294 to replace the SADD Shaft....

Yes, that is usually what it is. They vibrate at idle in gear alot to when bad. The rubber insulator usually goes away and then they knock, squeal,or vibrate.
Th SADD shaft is connected to the fron crankshaft pulley on the engine and then to another housing that hold all of your accessories and this is what the belts for those accessories are driven off of.
It is a very typical problem.
