I'm new to this forum, and it seems that the forum members here at TundraSolutions are very good in providing detailed help for those in need.
I have a 2004 Sienna LE that came with the RSA(Rear Seat Audio) and the stock single CD/cassette head unit with built-in amp(Part# 86120-AE010). What I want to do, and it seems like a lot of other Toyota owners would like to do is...replace the single CD/cassette unit with the JBL 6disc/cassette head unit.
So far I've been able to obtain a 2004 Sienna JBL 6CD/cassette head unit (part#86120-AE030) which is made by Panasonic (stock headunit made by Fujitsu-Ten). I've also obtained the JBL amp needed (Part#86120-AE011). What I hoped was there ,but just tucked away was the harness to connect these two units together.
I can say now that this harness is NOT THERE, at least not in a Sienna CE or LE. The Sienna's JBL amp is located behind the glovebox.
Sienna owners that already have the JBL single CD/cassette unit will have no problem upgrading to the 6CD unit or DVD Navigation head unit,as they already have the JBL amp,and harness. What I have to fabricate, or get made now is a harness that has the 20 pin plug for the JBL 6CD unit on one end. 20/24 pin plugs for the JBL amp on the other end, and plug adapters for the 10 pin (speaker) plug, and 6pin (power)plug that used to plug into the back of the stock unit. There is a harness at www.oemvalue.com, but they are sold out, and this one has different amp plugs than what I need.
If anyone has, or can get the audio wiring diagrams for a 2004-2005 Sienna for 6 and 10 speaker setup, that would be great!!

WOW!! That was a fantastic response. I really appreciate the diagrams. I haven't had a chance yet to look at them, but I've also been in contact with a person who claims that he can custom fabricate the harness for me. It's always good to have the wiring diagrams to check that all the wires are going to the right places. Last thing I want to happen is that I smoke my JBL amp or JBL 6CD head unit because of a simple wiring mistake. If this elusive harness can be made, and everything works well in my Sienna. I will post my complete installation procedures with pictures on this forum for everyone to see.
I was able to get the needed harness custom made by a SiennaClub.org member TahirMallick . He did a great job, and made it very simple to connect the plugs of the existing radio harness to the custom harness connectors. Also the ends of the harness had the necessary plugs that I needed to connect to my JBL 6Disc CD/Cassette head unit, and JBL Amp.
I installed the amp in its proper location, and the head unit was a simple drop-in after I swapped the brackets. I tucked the harness behind the heater box, and plugged it all together. It all works great with my current stock 6 speaker configuration, and the JBL amp has the nice feature of "Surround Sound" that really boosts the Bass. This JBL Amp can also power a Sub and 3 other speakers, so I'm not stopping here.
I'm going to upgrade my Sienna's speaker configuration to 10 speakers, and have already purchased an Infinity Dual coil 10'' Sub for the back. Here are some pictures of how it all connected together so far.
I have finished with the stereo upgrade in my Sienna, and can say that "it can be done", and I feel it was worth the effort. The construction of the Sub Woofer enclosure took the longest time. I used 1/2 inch plywood in constructing the frame, asphalt matting inside the cavity, and on the outside seams of the original cavity. The left and right side rear panels "pop out" quite easily once you remove the 14mm seat belt anchor bolts, both sliding rear door floor panels that just pop off, and the rear trunk bottom panel that 'pops' up after you remove the 3 net anchor bolts. Watch out for the connectors for the floor lights, the rear 12volt socket, and rear top light when removing the rear panels.
I decided to use 4.5 inch coaxial Clarions for the rear "Surround" speakers because they had the smallest grill cover, and just fit in the 'original factory locations'. They are last years model and have a full grill for max protection. I knew that my kids would have wrecked any speaker with the 'New style' grills with large openings. I used 12-gauge speaker wiring for the Sub Woofer, and 14 for the rest. I used 3.5 coaxial Punch speakers for the 3 front dash speakers, including the front 'surround'.
There were a lot of small details that I won't mention.. unless asked about the construction of the Sub enclosure. I wanted it to be well made so that if I was not satisfied with the output from the JBL amp, that I could add a separate sub amp later, and my sub enclosure would be ready. I must have added 5 pounds to the left rear panel with the Sub enclosure, but there's no squeaks or rattles. The speaker cover frame I custom made from PVC plastic so I could glue the pieces together easily. I used speaker cloth and used spray adhesive to attach it the frame, and painted it to match the interior color. Velcro is used to keep the cover in place.
There is a total of 21 individual speakers now in my Sienna, and the van sure does rock at volume setting 40, but you really don't notice the rear Sub until volume setting 30. In general I feel that this is a huge improvement from the stock 6 speaker, single CD system I originally had, but... you can always improve. Lately I have redone the wiring for the rear "surround" speakers, and have connected them in parallel with the bottom rear speakers, and found that to improve the rear sound volume.
I include pictures of the Sub, and other speakers. Note that I had to drill holes in the front-center "surround" speaker grill for the 3.5inch coaxial speaker I installed. Non-JBL center grills have no sound vents in the CE and LE or fancy JBL lettering. Also notable is that both rear side panels have the positions outlined in the plastic for the factory 'surround' speakers.
This is my dash after I started with a MOMO wood shift knob that I got on sale. I then got the Wood/leather steering wheel from ebay's "steeringautoman". Still not happy I got the molded Woodview kit, and now I'm happier. It's interesting to also note that Woodview is located in Canada, but I got the best deal/price from a U.S. distributor on ebay "Automotive Style".
Re: Installing 6CD http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/atJBL Head Unit and JBL Amp
As some people might have guessed. It did not take long before I wondered how the 10'' SUB would sound if I had some real power going to it. I looked around, and found that MTX has a new line of small, no frill amplifiers that can produce some good power. I decided to go with the entry model TC2002 for it's small size ,and it's feature to automatically turn on and off with the speaker signals from the JBL amp. There was no space for a large to medium size amp anywhere near the JBL amp location behind the glove box, or under the front seats. I wanted to keep the amp under the dash, and off the floor for better air circulation so here is what I came up with. I made a mounting bracket out of ABS plastic, and secured it with small steel plates at three locations, and used existing bolts to mount it, that I found in the area of the photos. I leave some photos of how the amp looks installed, and I'm very satisfied with the performance of the amp. It has evened out the volume inside the van; where before most of the sound was coming from the front speakers, with the rear speaker sounding weaker. The MTX amp just powers the sub woofer, and I used a 2-channel model to drive a dual cone sub, but you can get a mono channel version with the same dimensions. This amp came with a remote gain control knob, and allows me to have the amp give the rear speakers that little boost with the family listening to the music...or have all the windows shaking when I drive the van alone.
Dear friend! Congratulations on a very fine job done! I would like to do exactly what you did, but for my 2007 RAV 4. It came with a "normal" stereo. I could get on e-Bay the JBL OEM 6 Disc CD-Changer for my RAV, but when I tried to connect it, my vehicle only has a 10 pin and a 6 pin connectors (just like your case) . How can I contact the person that made the cables for you? And another thing, do I need the JBL amplifier for the setup to work at least basically (you know without the sub-woofer) with the standard 6 factory speakers? If so, I am in trouble , and would need to start looking for it. Any help would be really, really appreciated, I am a complete beginner in the audio thing!
My case is like Farrouk's, I am stuck with a nice JBL 6CD-CH, bluetooth, MP3 player plus stereo, however it cannot be fitted into my 2007 RAV4 due to wire hardnesses incompatibility. Did anyone help Farrouk? please help me as well.
My first suggestion is to get the wiring diagrams for your vehicle, as I did for mine. They are a great reassurance, and vital tool for your project. Get as many documents you can get, because there are many JBL amp’s out there, and you want to be sure that you get the right one that will work with your 6CD/Head unit. I got JBL amp for $US100.00 used from a SiennaClub.org member. I also got my harness made by a Siennaclub.org member Tahir Mallick, and he did a great job. If you have the wiring diagram you could make your own harness…. if you can get the connectors…that’s the trick!!
Also try the Auto wreckers in your area. My experience with them was not so good as the Sienna model that had these harnesses was in great demand, but you never know!
There is also OEM Audio, Video, Radios, Electronics, and Car Navigation Systemsthat might have your JBL amp and harness.
I asked member Tonto for the amp info. He help me out and I was able to find the person made the wire. I had the amp and 6 CD changer put into my van after the long wait. I love the upgrade. Thank you so much, Tonto!!!!
It seems that there are a few Tundra Solution members who need the services of Tahir Mallick in the fabrication of the custom JBL harnesses. I have asked him, and I’ve gotten his permission to display his email address for all who need his services.
His email address is: [tahirmallick@hotmail.com], and he’s more than happy to help others with their JBL upgrade projects. He even has a few amps still available as I’m writing,
Give him as much detailed info as you can on your JBL project. I gave him pictures of the “connectors” I had in my vehicle, and pictures of the “connecters” on the JBL 6disc Head/JBL amp I wanted to connect to. Give him some time, as I think he only does this as a hobby, and he will make you what you need.
I have the same stock unit like you ( 6 10 pin and Fujitsu-Ten Audio system). I want to convert and not sure this external amp will work (6 pin, 10 pin from the Sienna LE harness to the AMP and 20 pin connector to the Head Unit). I am not sure what type or name of this Amp!
Please take a look for me.
I do not have part number but the descriptions are below.
WORKS WITH MANY TOYOTA VEHICLE'S SOUND SYSTEMS.
IT HAS 6 PIN, 10 PIN FOR TOYOTA HARNESS AND A 20 PIN CONNECTOR FOR JBL OR PREMIUM SOUND RADIO
I also looked at this type of amp and the answer I got back was...NO IT WONT WORK with the JBL 6disc head unit. I'm not sure what kind of head unit you are wanting to install, but if it's like the one I installed you're going to have to use the same JBL AMP. If I'm not mistaken there are the only three models of the JBL AMP used in the Sienna from 2004-2005
86280-AE010 (earlier model)
86280-AE011 (Model that I'm using)
86280-AE012 (Newer Model)
AH!!!..all this has reminded me about a Toyota Service bulletin AU001-05. Issued August 2 2005 that explains about an issue with these amps and a "Popping" noise. This noise problem was all repairable under warranty, and the bulletin has detailed listing of all JBL amps affected and what Toyota vehicle they belong in. (great for reference)
These JBL amps are very popular, as they can also power the NAVIGATION Head unit for the 2004-2005 Sienna's. Many people have sold their JBL 6disc head unit on ebay, after upgrading to a "Nav Unit".
If I'm not mistaken for 2006 Toyota went to a Fujistsu-Ten 6disc head unit that had no tape deck anymore, and offered a Ipod/Audio input instead. This 6 disc head unit has an integrated amplifier. I'm not sure if this is what you have in you 2007 Sienna.
I like having the tape deck in my head unit, It's kept my old walkman tape deck adapter useful , but I'd trade it in for your 3.5LV6 engine any day.
So in general make sure to use the right JBL amp for your vehicle/head unit, and MAKE SURE it's been repaired for the known issue in the TSB.
Great post and pictures .... sounds like you've got a great system running in your Sienna!
My family has recently purchased a 2004 LE and the first thing I did was to purchase the 6 disc factory changer, 86120-AEO53 from ebay (probably one of the ones from the people on this board who upgraded to the Nav units!). From what I've learned, the model I purchased is a non-JBL self-powered unit from a 2006 Sienna without the JBL synthesis system, however, it was simply plug-and-play with regards to the factory wiring harness. My question was where you found your information regarding which factory JBL amps were compatible with which specific receivers. I am not creative enough to find another location for an external amp, so it's looking like the factory amp behind the glovebox might have to suffice for now.
Secondly, if you could elaborate on the construction of the subwoofer box in the rear trunk panel, it would be greatly appreciated. I plan on tackling the same procedure so any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated (in addition to all the information that you've already provided!).
