I just purchased a 2008 Toyota Sienna and have seen this exact problem. I find if you tap on the radio near the volume knob, the display comes back. Heck, I've even seen the display show what looks like alien characters. It shows complete garbage information. I can't believe this issue has been going on for so long.

My radio (and DVD system) just died as well. It seems to be a power problem - all the fuses are OK, but when driving at night, the dial lights flicker as though there's a loose wire. 2005 Sienna XLE.

My 2004 Sienna XLE Limited had electrical problems since day 1, so it was not too surprising, but again disappointing when the radio started doing random actions, i.e. if you pressed FM, it turned OFF. If you selected a preset station 2 it went to present station 5, etc. Usually, rebooting the computer (restarting the vehicle) worked for a short time and these events occurred during the summer.

Two years ago, I had the windshield replaced - no problems with the radio since that time. Any correlation? The dealer doesn't think so.....hmmm.

I had the same problem on my 2004 Sienna, the Radio display would fade away or display japanese characters, no tuning no volume control etc.

Since the radio is computer controlled and clearly needed a reboot, I removed the fuse, and put them back in. No luck. So I did one better, I undid the negative battery cable from the van for 10 minutes and put it back on again. Presto - good as new.

Learned that trick with a JVC after market radio which did the same thing on my other car, same trick worked.

Good luck, hopefully you will save some money and throw one less radio into a land fill.
