I own a 2004 LE AWD and pull a 2600 lb travel trailer. The worst I get with that is 12 mpg. There is definately something wrong. On the highway I usually hit around 23-25 mpg.
You "guys" getting more than 20mpg are probably not going to get any response from a Toyota Tech-----mine is never seeing that high of mileage!! and they say everything is fine!!!!!!!!!
My wife's 2004 sienna gets 22 mpg highway. We were planning on bringing it up with the tech. No lead foot. Just 70 to 75 mph with cruise control.
That's about what we see with our '04 sienna too.
Remember this is a heavy vehicle.
From the Toyota web site Sienna
(CE & LE curb weight 4140, XLE & Limited 4255). Tundra
Regular Cab 4550
Access Cab (Limited) 4785/(4735)
DC (4765)
So these vans weigh almost as much as the Tundra and it has a V6 hauling it around.
A lot of glass and a peppy v6 = not very good mpg.
Plus it's a van; three rows of seats, the entire family and all of their stuff....All of that adds up.
I would like to get better MPG, but I don't see it happening. I have tried varying my driving style, keeping the tires properly inflated, etc. Maybe I'll change the sparkplugs.
Well, here it is----we just took another trip and one-way got 20MPG, and the other way got 23MPG-----we have no case now! Around town we still average 12-13MPG----I think this is what the vehicle is going to get with nothing anything we can do. We do have friends driving Siennas getting (they swear) 20 MPG, but after careful consideration of the facts(4255 lb.s), I think we have what we have. I do wish that Toyota would have posted more accurate mileage spec.s on the window sticker, and I still believe our odometer/mileage calculations are off because; on our last trip my odometer would read 9.3 miles travelled for every ten mile-markers---if those things are accurate, then my odometer and mileage calculations are off by 7%. The XLE that we bought came with 225-60/17 tires, and the others come with 215-65/16 tires putting the mileage closer to what the mile markers would read.

jjc, That highway mileage isn't too bad. That's about what we're seeing overall. We are thinking about another vehicle for around town and just using the sienna for road trips, or when we need to carry more.
Good to see you're getting better highway mileage. Just wondering, seems the people with the complaints are in XLE's. Ah, all the cool computer doo-hicky's. VSC, Traction control, etc.. I specifically bought my LE without these options. I'm just guessing, but it seems to be related here.

I also think it's related to the XLE, but not for the reasons you think---I believe it's because of the larger diameter and width tires that come with the XLE!!!!
Well you are not alone had an 2004 xle 2wd got 22 in town and 26 on the highway. Currently own an 2006 xle limited 2wd and get 18 highway and 15 in town. It also has 17" wheels my dealer blames the lazer cruze. I however do not buy this. I was wondering if it might be the cal. of to.
We have a 2005 XLE Limited and get 21 mpg average. The laser cruise control hurt gas mileage because of how it acelerates when it get away from behind a car that is slowing it down. The aceleration rate is way too high, like flooring the gas pedal to get back up to speed. On trips I can get as high as 29 mpg if I leave it off of cruse control.
We have a 2005 XLE- 17" wheels. I have been fighting with the dealer since it was new, (now 50k+ miles).
NEVER been able to get over 20mpg highway, no matter how careful I am. City is so bad I can't believe it.
Traded in a 1999 Odyssey which always got 25-28mpg highway. I thought 1 more gear and better technology would equal better milage than we had been getting.
The car does not want to stay in 5th gear. It downshifts on the slightest grade, sometimes into third.
I have asked the dealer to check it out repeatedly. The answer I get is that 'if no warning lights are on, nothing is wrong with the car.'
I really belive this is related to the programming of the transmission.
Again, the dealer says the transmission is acting normally, and has "Learned" to shift the way it does from our driving pattern.
I wish us both good luck. I am buying a TCH, and giving my Civic to the wife. The van can stay parked unless we really need it!
I am glad I found this post. I am sorry to hear of your bad MPG jjc!!!
Our 2001 Sequoia gets 15mpg all day and 18+ on the hiway. We have been wanting to trade in our Sequoia on a 06 Sienna just for the savings in gas. I still like the Sienna but I can not believe the difference in estimated and actual MPG. I just looked at Fuel Economy and 6 people across the us got an average of 18MPG. That stinks in my opinion.
Weight shouldn't even be an issue. We owned 2 1993 VW Eurovans, one a weekender with pop top camper and they both got 18/22MPG (city/hiway) Talk about overweight and under powered 2.5 liter engine.
Good luck with your Sienna! I might just stick with our V8 Sequoia or even buy another VW Eurovan. (Yeah I know they need some fixin.)
My lowest MPGs for my 06 Sienna CE, FWD with 15000 miles so far is 24.0; my best is 28.9. Have not been on a road trip with lots of interstate driving but I think it may hit 30 on such a trip unless I have the "kitchen sink" loaded for the trip!
I'm very pleased with my 06 Sienna. My previous van was a 92 Previa with the 2.4 liter engine and it did not do any better.
