Default Sienna Bad MPG

Has anyone else gotten an average gas mileage of 14.5 with some city and mostly highway driving? If so, do you have the 17inch wheels? I've talked with other friends of mine who get between 18-20 MPG city but they have the 16 inch wheels. Maybe there is a miscalculation in the car's ECU because it is set up to display miles driven(odometer) based on the 16 inch tire----throwing of the odometer, speedometer, shift points(mine hunts alot in 5th gear on the highway!!), etc......

jjc...you're making me feel good about the mileage we get with our '04 Sienna. We average about 21-22 mpg overall. The onboard computer always displays between 24-25mpg, but I've never seen that in real world calculations.

I've got the 16 inch Michelin Harmony tires. Mobile 1 in the engine.

The Sienna is a heavy vehicle, with all that glass.

Then if you're like us, you're taking the whole family and all of their stuff which adds up. The engine is always working.

I think the difference between 16 and 17 inch tires may make some difference, but not as much as you are seeing.

Good Luck,
Jeff

Unhappy Re: Sienna Bad MPG

Thanks Jeff,
Don't know if the 17s are the culprit, but should be getting better gas mileage I think. We are looking to get rid of the van now----the main reason we sold our Supercharged Double-Cab Tundra and our Landcruiser was bad gas mileage---they were getting 12-13 around town, and 15-16 highway----looks like the van is the same---

With a Sienna you probably should be getting better mileage.

Did you notice a sudden drop or has it always been like this? Is it time for a tune-up or did you get new tires?

Is your Sienna AWD? That may make a difference too.

Forgot to mention all that----2006 Toyota Sienna XLE FWD with 17 inch tires,550 miles. It Has averaged 11-13 mpg around town, and this last tank with 75% highway has averaged 14.5. Toyota checked it all out----I trust their tech, he did phenomenal work on our Tundra--- and reports no problems with the computer diagnostics. They find no problems with it, so I'm stuck with a van that I traded my 2004 Supercharged Tundra Double-Cab for!!! I am now looking for a "legal" way to get rid of the van. Going to look at completely different options.

That doesn't sound good. Something doesn't seemright. But with only 550 miles you have only had 2 or 3 tankfulls. Maybe it will improve as it breaks in. I would do two quick oil changes. One at 1k to remove any filings and another at 3k over to synthetic. That may make a difference.

Did they check the brakes? Maybe the e-brake is sticking? Just trying to brainstorm for possibilities.

Angry Re: Sienna Bad MPG

We're trying to get rid of it this weekend, but if they won't buy it back(at our loss of course) or we can't trade it to another dealer, or sell it to CARMAX, then---- if we are stuck with it(we will still be putting it up for sale), then we will have them check the e-brake and alignment and stuff---that's a good suggestion, thank you. Too bad it just won't spontaneously combust!

It's great I found this thread. I've got a 2006 Sienna LE 2WD with 6,000 miles on the odometer and i'm averaging 13.5 mpg according to my onboard computer. I have been doing about 99% of my driving in the city.

I bought my Sienna because I thought it would get better gas mileage than an SUV, but my brother has an old Ford Expedition that does about the same mileage!

I don't know if it's the fact that the engine is still in break-in, but i've had the oil changed regularly, the tires are always optimally inflated, and I even go light on the gas at lights to maximize MPG.

I know the Sienna is very fuel efficient on the highway, but should the city gas mileage be this way off?

Well you are not alone had an 2004 xle 2wd got 22 in town and 26 on the highway. Currently own an 2006 xle limited 2wd and get 18 highway and 15 in town. It also has 17" wheels my dealer blames the lazer cruze. I however do not buy this. I was wondering if it might be the cal. of to.

Something has got to be wrong to get only 13-14 mpg. I track all of my fillups on a spreadsheet and looking through those the worst my van has ever done is 15.8 mpg. Total average of 18.5 mpg, with 21k on van. The majority of this driving is in town, stop and go, by my wife with a lead foot. (already gone through a set of front brakes)

I would not trust the onboard "computer" at all for an accurate check of mileage. It is at best a toy to play around with. Do the math on several tankfuls before drawing any meaningful conclusion. Anything less is basing your conclusion on ignorance.

I have seen someone not familiar with the van, get in and put the gearshift in 4 instead of drive. It is easy enough to do. That would definitely explain a 13-14 mpg. I am not saying this is your situation, but it is something to be aware of. ( I think the original post stated the van only had a few hundred miles on it).

Well---Toyota would not buy back the van without me taking a $6000 loss---now we are going through lawyers to get rid of this "gas hog". It is still averaging 11-13 mpg around town(calculated), and got 17 on a highway trip----all the while trying to go light on the throttle and get good gas mileage. I did notice a difference between mile markers and my odometer, but again Toyota says my van is calibrated perfectly. There has to be something wrong with this van---Toyota says nothing wrong.

the sponsored link in this thread states
"2006 Toyota® Sienna®
Seats 8. Gets 26 MPG Low monthly payments on Sienna's"

Something is not right. Make sure to take it to an independant shop to have it calibrated.

Good Luck,
Jeff

I got your PM---thank you. I'll use that in our case----even though it says actual mileage may very, 11-13 is nearly %50 less than what they advertised, and is absurd!!!!
