Yes, the term air box does refer to where the air filter is located. The VSV is mounted on the back of it. It certainly is possible that you knocked off the vacuum hose or something else.
This TSB explains the testing method used by the Dealer. Obviously, it would require special test equipment, however it does show a picture where the VSV is and the part number.
