has anyone removed the screen behind the throttle body on the 5.7l.
It looks restictive was wondering if anyone had removed it and noticed a gain in hp.

I highly doubt it's restrictive. The HC filter in the airbox is probably 10 times more restrictive than the screen.

i dont think its worth the risk of vioding your warantee(god forbid something goes wrong)

I know for a fact that the screen/filter thing directly above the air filter in the stock air box gets removed when you switch to a CAI. Probably safe to take that one out.:tu:

Yes, that helps quite a bit.

the maf is an air diffuser.. helps stabilize the reading.

can you pry out that screen above the airfilter with a screwdriver or do you have to cut it out with something?

You can remove it but its not going to add any power. Its an airflow straightener and helps the maf read airflow accurately. What it might do is decrease mileage and effect drive ability if you yank it. You can get away with it at the dragstrip. I would leave it alone on a road car. The engineers put it there for a reason...

On the Gen 1 4.7 there are plastic rivets which are easy to cut off with a chisel. If you want to put it pack at some point, some small self tapping screws should work.

i dont think so, they sell aftermarket cai's like afe, airaid,k&n,etc. and they dont have that screen filter. taking it out wont hurt your mileage or mess with maf readings imo. think its just there for the west coast crowd.

I sell and deal with airflow equipment daily so I know quite a bit about it. Without a straightener, the airflow readings can be inaccurate especially if the entrance air comes off an elbow or some convoluted intake pipe. It distributes the air more evenly across the sensor. Obviously they will work w/o it as all of the aftermarket companies leave it out. I have done a few pressure differentials across a screen. Its almost immeasurable.

We may have two different screens here. One is the HC filter which is upstream of the throttle body, and apparently there is another screen downstream of the throttle body?

The one I would want to know about is the white one in the inside of the air box lid. It looks to be held in by plastic type rivets.

Yes you can just pull this one off carefully. I think I will try taking off the TB screen. Maybe it will give me .10 or so in the 1/4! (wishful thinking)

well if anyone has or will removed the screen after the TB let us know the results and if we need to buy gaskets or orings to do it ourselfs.

thanks in advance.:tu:

Well, I just pulled off the screen behind the throttle body. It took me about 20 minutes or so. What I did was removed the intake tube and intake plenum(attached to the intake manifold with 4- 10mm screws) as well as the electical plug. I pulled the plenum out of the way. Next, pulled off the screen darn carefully and cut the attached ring of the screen which consisted of 6 prongs holding the screen to the rubber gasket. I then carefully cut these prongs as close to the rubber gasket as possible with ultra fine wire snips. Reinstallation included using a thin coating of grease on both sides to make sure there is no air leak and reinstallation in the reverse order. A snap! Easily done.....Truck seems a little peppier with the screen removed. I will post some G-tech times tomorrow. Hope this gives me .10 or better so as to be the first into the 13's stock!!

I may need a trip to the hardware store tomorrow. Snip snip. :D

Just make sure you also have something to flatten the uncut portions of the prongs. Also make sure you position the O-ring carefully since now it has no "mojo" with everything being shifted and removed.
I have never had Burger, Steak, and Eggs for breakfast. This morning it was Eggs, Toast, Hashed Browns, and some OJ. JK LOLOL! :D:D
Good luck, BS&E!

With all the available power upgrades for the Tundra, I would not recommend doing this for an immeasurable amount of power. The screen helps stabilize the airflow and decrease turbulence. When I had my RX8, there were some owners who did this and the result was always worse mpg's, crappy idle and stalling. Get an intake and exhaust, but leave the screen there. Things could be different with the Tundra, but I wouldn't risk it.

On this note...does anyone know if putting some type of screen after the CAI 'cone' filter, before the MAF could help with the mpg? The pressure stabilization thing is new to me, but worth a look...when I put on my Airaid, I lost about 1.5 mpg, which I'd love to regain.
