I bought a 2000 Tundra Limited a few months ago. The people I bought it from replaced the drivers side w/ a new manifold. After getting the vehicle it was obvious there was still an exhaust leak.... to make a long story short... I had the passenger manifold fix (welded) and the new drivers side taken apart, inspected and reinstalled. The manifold was not bolted tight and two bolts missing from the heat shield.

I still hear a tick tick sound especially on the highway. Is this a piston slap sound or should I continue to look for more manifold leaks? I expected to hear a nice smooth V8 sound from my Toyota. I could turn the radio up but that sounds like a tin can. Everytime I have work done to it the sounds is reduced but it is still there.

Any suggestions other than headers?

I'm assuming you've checked the Steering shaft seal? This seal sits right on the firewall directly in back of the drivers side manifold and lets in tons of noise from that manifold. For $15 or so, it's a part that seems to wear out and rip after about 6 yrs on most Toyota trucks. To see it, crawl up under the drivers side door, take a flashlight with you, and look up the firewall steering wheel shaft, takes 15 sec's to check. It's happened to a lot of us here.

Thank you for the reply. I read about this seal after I posted my question. I will check tomorrow ... I'm thinking it must be something silly like that.

BTW, my last vehicle was a 95 Jimmy. I'd spend about $5K / year to keep it running and I only drove about 8K miles / year. I had so many rattles I avoided cracks in the road. Even the hood rattled which I discovered after the ball joints and tie rod ends were replaced.

I don't care if my Tundra ticks a bit because it starts everyday and takes me to work in style.

I had a similar problem with my 2000 but the dealer ended up fixing it while it was under the extended warranty. The dealer couldn't find the problem the first time I took it in but the second time I believe they replaced the manifolds. I haven't had the problem since.
