: I just changed my spark plugs in my 4.7L wirelessf 11-16-2007, 07:03 PM My truck has 56.5K on it and might as well change the spark plugs before the 30,000mi interval. I 've replaced the stock denso's with the Bosch's Platinum +4 spark plugs, which doesn't need gapping. The install was pretty easy and quick, in over an hour. What surprised me before the install (just in case I need special tools) is how deep the spark plug is. I used a 12" extender to reach the spark plugs. chris9918 11-16-2007, 07:42 PM Just curious, why did you go with bosch? strib 11-16-2007, 07:49 PM deleted by poster! Omega Supreme 11-16-2007, 08:03 PM I would have stayed with some average NGK's.. Hey wirelessf,, thank you for the tip on the DRL. Worked like a charm. 2 min and done!!! Puffnstuff 11-17-2007, 05:20 AM Having used the +4's before I wouldn't mount them in a lawnmower or anything else that I cared about. randyeverett 11-17-2007, 05:53 AM Hell there was a post just last week about a guy who had a monster vibration that ended up being a failed plug...........Bosch Plat (+ 4's I think) were the culprits.
Here it is: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1gen-tundra/115964-at-50mph-violent-frontend-shaking-trans/ mustang67408 11-17-2007, 06:33 AM Do a search and the general consensus is BOSCH Plug are one of the worst.
Having seen them in TOYOTAS over the last (ALOT) years, I AGREE, they suck. They cause misses, hesitations, excessive fuel MPG drop ect......... I have even seen them melt coil packs in camry's/tacoma's/sienna's/tundra's and sequoia's.
I would advise to go back to Denso or NGK as soon as possible. chris9918 11-17-2007, 06:39 AM That was my truck that was was misfiriing with bosch. They had my traking shaking so bad that i thought my transmission was gonna fall out. I switched back to denso and everything is back to normal. I will never put a german spark plug in a japanese engine again Puffnstuff 11-17-2007, 06:42 AM I ran +4's in my silverado with the 5.3 and it started running like crap right afterwards. I pulled them out and put in champion plats and it smoothed right out. I will never run a bosch plug ever again. If I still own this truck when it's time to replace the plugs I'll get replacement iridiums like are already in there. I plan to put iridium in everything I drive if it doesn't already have them from the factory. At least toyota installed them on the vvt-i engines at the factory. Sinner 11-17-2007, 06:43 AM I just bought the Bosch platinum +4's the other day and I was going to install them tomorrow. After reading this, I may take them back and get Denso's or NGK's. I thought I read somewhere that people loved the Bosch's. O'well, at least I didn't install them yet. mustang67408 11-17-2007, 06:55 AM Champions are just as bad in a Toyota, they belong in Chryslers/lawnmowers and Harleys and Evinrude outboard engines.
DENSO or NGK RitcheyRch 11-17-2007, 07:40 AM Champions also belong in Evinrude outboard engines.
I run NGK's in everything I own except the above mentioned engine.

Take em back and trade them in for NGK's and take the difference in cash and buy a couple of cases of beer.

:ts::D wirelessf 11-17-2007, 09:35 AM Well I did order the spark plugs over the internet, and knowing nothing about what kinds to use or what brand, I thought I'd go with german enginnered brands (ie bilstien, bosch, etc). I still never noticed any problems.
Now that you guys told me, I'm gonna order NGK Iridiums IX spark plugs. Before I hit the order button, tell me if these spark plugs are good.

Did you get a check engine light? Now that you guys told me, I'm gonna order NGK Iridiums IX spark plugs. That's what I went with. It's only been 50 miles or so but no ill effects. chris9918 11-17-2007, 01:25 PM No i didnt get a check engine light. I didnt even know there was anything wrong with the plugs until i had the vehicle for about 4months(i bought it used). All of a sudden i started having problems that felt like transmission problems. As soon as i changed the plugs it was all better. I would not have believed the plugs could cause that kind of problems if it had not happened to me. I used the copper denso, but only because i was told the earlier model tundras like em better. I dont know if theres any truth to that! Good luck Sinner 11-18-2007, 03:04 PM Well, after reading this posts and searching all the other ones about bosch plugs, I took the platinum +4's back and got NGK Iridium IX's. I just put them in and the truck is running good on the first test run. The plugs I replaced were Champion RC12PYP. I felt a noticable difference.
On a side note my RPM was very low last week to the point where the engine shut down when I came to a stop. After reading some other posts in this forum, I cleaned out the throttle body (which was filthy), changed the air filter, and changed out the plugs. RPM's are up and the my truck is running great. I may clean out the MAF, but I would rather not touch it if I don't have to. randyeverett 11-18-2007, 06:58 PM Well, after reading this posts and searching all the other ones about bosch plugs, I took the platinum +4's back and got NGK Iridium IX's. You have done well, young grasshopper. Now, go forth and drive the crap out of it. :)
RE Alright, another newbie question -
How does one clean out the throttle body??? Muleskinner 11-18-2007, 08:15 PM My 04 DC has 48,000 miles on it and I figured I might as well replace the plugs, as the electrodes were starting to look a bit worn. I went down to the nearby Auto Zone with the intention of purchasing eight Bosch platinum four electrode style plugs. (Hey the idea of four electrodes seems to be a good one)
The guy working the counter said, "Don't do it! I've worked here three years and in that time period I have personally seen three cases where the center electrode broke off, fell into the cylinder, and caused engine damage."
I said thanks and bought eight NGK Iridium IX's. I know NGK makes a good product and the counter guy said the Iridium IX's are supposed to be a great spark plug. :tu: kbl41001 11-19-2007, 06:14 AM Alright, another newbie question -

Using throttle body cleaner and a rag also some minor tools it is not real hard to do I do it at each oil change. For details it has been talked about before in here or you could just pm me and I could explain in more detail.
Kevin Thanks for the offer Kevin -
I did find enough material here and elsewhere that I can take it from here. Appears I should address the MAF while I'm at it too.
Thank you! robbob 11-19-2007, 08:47 AM Bosch platnium +4 caused intermitant CIL indicating the right catalytic was malfunctioning...... the CIL would come on for no apparent reason, and then go off again on it's own if I didn't get around to resetting it... sometimes 10k miles between, sometimes a few hundred. I figured it was an O2 sensor that was flakey but since the gas mileage was ok and it ran fine I never fixed it... since changing back to NGK plugs 20k miles ago, no CIL.
Robert Bosch platnium +4 caused intermitant CIL indicating the right catalytic was malfunctioning...... Umm, what's "CIL?" mustang67408 11-19-2007, 09:26 AM Umm, what's "CIL?"
Check Engine Light I figured it was from how it was used, but was expecting "CEL."
Thanks Mustang. wirelessf 11-22-2007, 06:23 PM Well I trashed the Boschs and went with NGK Iridums IX's. At least I can sleep better now and not worrying about burning anything. randyeverett 11-22-2007, 09:02 PM Well I trashed the Boschs and went with NGK Iridums IX's. Well, good. Now I feel better also. :)
How are things in Waipahu? Is the Waipahu Inn (small beer joint) still there in the small strip mall?
Had some good times there............was thrown out on my *** at least three times during my tour. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g240/Parasympathic/PurpleHaze.gif
For a short while, I lived in the apartments right next to there. Didn't have to drive home.... I could just walk or crawl. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g240/Parasympathic/helmut.gif
I just had a flash-back. Does that make me a drugie?
I wonder if I could get disability, hmmmmm. wirelessf 11-22-2007, 10:06 PM Well, good. Now I feel better also. :)

Things in Waipahu are fine. I've never been there before and I dunno if it's there or not. But there are a lot of major changes in Waipahu though. The ol Sugar plantation building w/ the smokestack has been turned into a YMCA, the ol Big Way has been turned into a market place and new warehouses are being built on where most of the sugar plantation buildings used to be. mungo 11-23-2007, 04:46 PM Champions are just as bad in a Toyota, they belong in Chryslers/lawnmowers and Harleys and Evinrude outboard engines.
DENSO or NGK
LOL! I know Champions are the stock Harley plugs, but I'd never put them in there. NGK Iridiums only.
I put the Bosch 4+ in my Tacoma and had to take them back out after about 500 miles. I had thought I messed up one of the wires,or failed to get a spark plug connector on tight. Muleskinner 11-24-2007, 09:01 AM Champion spark plugs have ALWAYS been junk. I started in the auto repair business in the late 60's and they were a cheap plug then. |
