Hey everybody I'm new to the site but not new to trucks. I've got an '05 tundra TRD 4x4 w/ bald tires. Tire shops say I can only use 265-70-16,but selection is limited. I would go higher or wider (or both), but must retain my stock aluminuim rims for now. I also have the stock suspension w/ the off road package. 2nd what tires do you guys like? This truck does a lot of highway miles and I love its smooth ,quiet ride. Its other main function is a tool carrier and fuel\maintenance tender for heavy equipment. So I do go offroad in the mud and drive in heavy snow frequently. thanks for the help this site seems pretty cool.

Hi,

Your local tire shop might have limited selection, but if you search on tirerack.com for this size and select highway all season and on/off road terrain it comes up with 46 matches. So find the one you want and then have your local tire ship order them, and make sure they meet the tirerack price!

The tires that seem to repeatedly get favorable reviews are the:

Bridgestone Dueler A/T revos
BFGoodrich All terrain T/A KO

Stay away from the OEM BFGoodrich rugged trails that most likely came with your truck as they are scary in bad weather conditions, many tundra owners switch them out immediately.

You can safely go to 265/75-16s on the stock rims and stock suspension. But don't try anything bigger.

Hello!
Newbie here, owned my 2004 Tundra 4X4 Limited double cab since new. I too am shopping for new tires, perhaps upgrade to larger wheels? Currently 61K on my Tundra. Let me know what you decide OK? I am "on the fence" about bigger "wheels" but that is probably the way I'm going to end up.
Thanks!

Michellin ATX2's are nice, i have a set and they ride smooth and balance pretty well! mine are Flotation tires which have balance issues but the normal size tires should balance OK!! owners manual size is what i would go with and i went with Michellins for their long wear life and quality!! Hard to Beat, i used to use Goodyears but wear was way too fast and way too much money for the quality ya get!

super bee ski , I'm gonna try nitto terra grapplers 265 75 r16 for now , they are cheap and aggressive and I kinda want to wait on bigger rims until I play with the suspension a bit which maybe soon. also are u a polish mopar-head or do u just like skiing, I 'm all of the above lol....

Do a quick search, I know there are some people here running Terra Grapplers.

Unfortunately mud & snow tires don't mix, one needs a large void ratio and solid lugs to keep from chunking, the other needs a medium void ratio to clear without digging and a ton of siping.

I've had good results with studded X/T tires in the past, if you live somewhere worth getting studded snow tires, but w/o studs on ice the compound was too hard to grip anything.

The best, strongest compromise tire IMHO is the BFG AT/KO. It's very good in the snow, and does get the "snowflake" rating for winter traction, tho the tread hardens over the years. Beyond 10K miles or one summer, they're not as good on ice and you will notice. They're no fun in mud, tho, particularly sticky clay mud that clings to the tires. The sidewalls are very strong.

If you're on the job site in the muck a lot, Interco makes some very aggressive light truck radials now, they'll help you get around.

Stick with 16" rims. The truck will perform much better offroad and in snow. From the little I've read, people like the Terra Grapplers and it's a very similar tread to the BFG AT/KO so it should treat you well in snow and dirt, if not mud.

Good luck,
Sean

OK. I'm having a little humble pie. I keep preaching on the downside of going with larger tires. Now, my son is looking at new tires for his F-250 diesel that has some good BFG AT's in 265-75 16 & says he'll ship them to me. Well, free is a good deal & I could keep them until this winter when I was going to replace the stock tires, although I was planning on the same size, just a different tread. On the downside, I think they will kill my mpg's & torque, plus the cost of getting them mounted & balanced, & also be harder for my wife to get in the truck. She has trouble with just the 245 70 16's(5' 2", eyes of blue). So I'm thinking I should tell him to sell them. I know they would look great but would there be any other advantage? How significant are the losses in performance?

Stock size from the factory is 265/70-16. If you go to 265/75-16, you are only talking about a 4mm increase in the diameter of the tire, so performance loss is so small, it is immeasurable.

Except my stock tire is 245 70 16. According to a spreadsheet I made, my tire is 29.5" in diameter & a 265 75 16 is 31.65" in diameter & I'll go from (an effective) rear gear of 4.06 to 3.78. Going from the other stock tire of 265 70 16 to the 75 series is a change of just 1.04" in diameter. I'm looking at about a 7% difference in diameter plus the weight & tread width. Doesn't sound like that much, I guess. If they were MT's I'd just go ahead & get some more stock rims & use them during hunting season but AT's...Gee, I don't know. But free is hard to pass up.

Some Tundras came with the 245s and some came with 265s. I think the 4WDs with the TRD package had the bigger tires. I never had 245s to compare with 265s so I'm not sure what to tell you. Me? I'd take the free tires.
