I got the same thing and asked the same question. Check it out--i like the guy who drilled a special hole for the power cord in his dash. Looks good!

My stereo guy did it. He got an adapter for the cigarette lighter to hardwire to the fusebox (wires hidden behind dash). He took the useless change holder and filed it down. Then took the suction mount (exact size as change holder, btw) and epoxied and screw it on to change holder for a sturdy mount. Good thing about the location is that it was easily programmable since it was in close proximity to the shifter. The fact that the mount was adjustable made it easy to move away from potential glare. Of course, the NAV was easily removeable for safe keeping, too.

I placed my brand new tom tom in the same place. I just snapped up the dash in that area, squeezed the tabs together that are on the coin holder thing, took it all the way off and then mounted the sticky disc shaped dash mount and then put the gps right there. Best spot in my opinion.

Do you not find your arm/hand obstructs the view?
I mounted mine next to the rear view mirror - I am accustomed to glancing up in that area, so it seemed like a logical spot for me.

Nice clean looking install. But isn't that where my 4WD switch is at? I guess there is a change holder there if not 4WD?

If you have 4WD the best place I have found is where "ponyuk" has theirs... Hardwired into the overhead console for power and off I go...

Garmin is way better than tom tom IMO. Garmin has more updates and to me, is more user friendly. That set up on the coin holder works pretty good if you don't have the column shifter. I tried it with my column shifter and it's a little crowded.

I have the Garmin StreetPilot 340c here and love it.

I've heard from many that the Garmin has superior POI's.

I did my fair share of research and with the new TeleAtlas map updates I went with TomTom. I think the Garmin's are great units, I just couldn't find one with the same option set as the TomTom for the price.

I agree with TomTom having the better bang for the buck, the shape really plucks my nerves though. My wife has the Garmin, she constantly swipes mine. Go figure... if I had bought here the TomTom she'd be swiping the Garmin.

That was one of the reasons I mounted mine near the rearview mirror; that and i worried I would bang in to it whenever I climbed in and out of the cab.
Tucking it next to the mirror means it cannot easily be seen from outside (you can't see it through the windscreen due to the tint and that darker area that covers the mirror mount), you can't see it from the side unless you go right up to the truck - in which case anywhere you mount it is going to be visible.

I think the most important thing is where ever permanently mount it try and not make it look like an after thought.

And don't block your drivers view or the view of other guages in the cab.

Actually the sand bag works great. You lay the GPS on the dash, its easily seen without taking your eyes off the road and looking down and away. And with the sand bag you can remove the unit and store it or lock it up out of site.

Well actually its tucked up under the heavy tint on the windshield so from the front it is hard to see. From the side its hidden by the A pillar quite a bit. Yes if you stand by the side to the rear it is visiable. But if im going to park it for a while I will pop the whole thing off and store it out of site.

Good points though because your right Im sure thieves love these things.

Garmin and the other manufactures should offer a Lo Jack like system for these. Im sure they could set it up where they could track any reciever they sold. Damn system would bring the cops right to the thieves.

I changed the splash screen on mine to read :
"STOLEN FROM < MY NAME >
TEL: <MY PHONE NUMBER>
REWARD FOR RETURN"
(when the unit is hooked to your computer just browse it and find the Garmin JPEG - then replace it with your own).

Garmin can kill the unit, rendering it useless, if you call them (at least they can on my model, a StreetPilot c580). If it is stolen they send a signal that locks it. It doesn't get it back, but at least stops some low life getting their fix at your expense.

I think they mean the 'portable friction mount' or beanbag mount.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/assets/images/products/010-10908-00/en/cf-lg.jpg

I never had any success with them. They are OK if you can wedge them somewhere, but otherwise I found they slid around too much - especially if you keep your cab clean and spray the dash with any type of polishing spray. I once tried the beanbag mount in a hire car and spent the whole journey picking the thing up off the floor. I ended up having to put it on the passenger seat (and the reception suffered a bit there). In an older Jeep I used to own I could place the beanbag mount in a recessed area of the dash and it was OK unless I had to brake really hard.

I stick mine to the left of RV mirror and wired it into ovehead console. It doesn't obstruct view and always keeps yer eyes looking forward. I used to have it lower near coin change thing but decided it was too dangerous, cause you were looking away from windshield all the time.
(rant)I know some states have laws about stuff stuck to windshields, but up here in canada anything goes. Some yahoos have so much crap hangin from there mirrors and stuck to their dash it amazin they can see out at all and cops don't do a thing about it.(end of rant)

I have the friction mount (sandbag) and it is great for me (pics in my pictures - linked below)...... FYI - thieves will still break in if you have a permanent or suction mount with the GPS removed.... since they know that most people just hide it in the vehicle

yeah - when I get around to it - they will be ran up the dash.... the unit has a pretty impressive battery life - so no need for wires..... The unit will slide around if I make any abrupt maneuvers...... like slam on the gas pedal from a complete stop - it will sometimes fly off - but this allows me to use it in my wifes LX470, as well. Normal driving - no issues..... And when I go to the mall or something, I can hide the base as well and no one is the wiser..... A friend of my wifes had her window smashed at the mall for her GPS - not worth the hassle

I live in one of the top ten cities for vehicle theft and break-in in the US. A local CHP advised against using the suction cup on the windshield as thieves will look for the "ring" after it's been removed and assume the GPS is in your glove box.

When needed, I actually use my Garmin StreetPilot in one of my cup holders and it does the trick. Of course I loose a cup holder. :)

If you are going to get a GPS unit, please for the sake of saving yourself time and money in the future DO NOT leave it in the window when the vehicle is parked.

They are the most stolen item. Find a place to hide it when not in use. I hate criminals but I feel no sympathy for people that leave crap to be stolen in plain sight.

I'll watch for your tall Salsa Red rig around town. My Tundra is not so distinct, but you might see me in my play car from time to time (see my avatar). I promise I'm well behaved (most of the time)!:)

Here is where I mounted my TomTom Go 930. I noticed that one of the mounting arms that came with my Sirius Starmate 4 had a similar ball mount to the TomTom suction cup mount but would fit where I wanted to put it. I pulled the respective mounts apart and they worked great! Cleaned the underside of the dash overhang with an alcohol pad before sticking the Sirius base with the TomTom mount. Seems to be a great location. Easy to reach to use, gets amazing reception and is inconspicuous so I'm not targeted my the less than honest. I could even upload my own start-up graphic. :yo:

Great idea boathik! The suction cup for my Nuvi 200 works really great with the smooth mounting disk that comes with the cup. I have been looking for a place that I can "inconspicuously" mount the disc, as I'd rather use that than get the tell-tale "suction cup ring" on my windshield..
BUT, I didn't want to mount the disc somewhere that was obvious too... Your location looks like a great idea! It looks like the disc will be "hidden" when I don't have the suction cup mounted to it. I am gonna see if my suction cup mount will fit in that area tonight! Good one! :yo:

Glad to help out but good luck! My sticky disk thing was way to big to fit there. The Sirius mount was oval and narrower. I think the mount is pretty inconspicuous without the GPS on it.

If you want to go to the trouble of installing an external antenna and connecting the power, you can mount it in your front sunglasses holder in the overhead console. That way you can just close it when it's not in use and hide the gps. no having to remove it.

I did that and mounted my xm in the middle holder.

I would post pick but truck is in the body shop getting 44 hail dents repaired. :)
