My wife has a 99 corolla LE with about 120K miles on it and there is a exhaust leak that I can't put my finger on. It is coming from under the engine almost like an exhaust manifold. I am unable to see it, and havent had the time to tear into it. Sound has been getting worse for the last 5K. Is there any common problems with these guys? I did a search and found little!!!!! Any help would be great;)!

Try this trick:

Get under the car. Anyplace there is a connection in the exhaust system, squirt (thouroughly soak) the connections with liquid soap (dishwashing liquid will work).

Then start the car. Put a very heavy leather glove on your hand, wrap some wet rags around it, and hold it tight over the end of the exhaust. The leaking exhaust gasses will cause the soap to bubble.

Then you've found your leak. :D

It is probably leaking at the engine Flex pipe. The fexible section usually shreds apart yet is hard to find, Yu can usually feel the exhaust escaping blowing out. It resembles a stainless steel braid covered pipe.

This is a common failure with a Corolla as old as yours. They sell aftermarket pipes for fairly cheap compared to OE. But I have had bad luck with the quality of the aftermarket Flex pipes.
They don't last nearly as long as the OE. My original lasted about 90K...then the aftermarket one was replaced twice within 4 additional years and only 35K miles later. Then I donated the car.

With this particular part...buy cheap, buy twice ..or three times over.

Think about how long yu will need to keep your Corolla and make the decision. Your call. I believe the OE pipe is more than double the price of aftermarket.

Also check all your donut gaskets at each pipe joint...catback, etc.

Did the soap idea do the trick?

My Corolla seems to be having the same exact problem. It started last winter after my car had to get pulled out of some snow. I'm assuming something got knocked loose from having all that hard snow packed up in there. This gives me a good starting point to fix the problem.
