What the difference between the Tacoma and Hilux? The Hilux seems to look a bit diffrent but is that it? Also is there any way to get a Hilux in the US?

I know they are still production but I didnt know where else to post, sorry.

The Hilux is used as a commerical vehicle in many parts of the world while the Tacoma is used more for personal use.

Differences that I know of are.

1. Hilux uses a fully boxed frame Tacoma uses C channel from cab back
2. Payload is significantly higher in Hilux..even more than Tundra
3. Diesel options available
4. Interiors are different

The Tacoma just looks tough the Hilux is tough .

I'm sure you could git them imported in...if yer willing to pay all the costs associated with them to git them up to US standards. ;)

HILUX is a sicker mofo out of the box. Got to drive one during a recent trip to mexico. I like the looks better, less bulge. Other than what pagemaster wrote, I don't other differences. the gears seemed lower than a 07 taco pre runner, then again I've only driven an auto pre runner.

The tacoma utilizes coil spring front suspension while the Hilux and older pickups used a torsion bar front suspension. The coil springs give a more "couchy" ride but are not as rugged. The tacoma also has a rack and pinion steering where the hilux uses the old steering box, you get much less road feedback from the rack and pinion.

Some of the 2wd tacomas you could still get the 2.4L but all the 4wd come with the 2.7L, other than that there is not much difference in the earlier model tacos.

I lived in Japan for a few years (Okinawa/military) and some of them were sick!! Factory diesel!! I looked at the list of what you could import to the US and the list was pretty small and jumbled. You could only import specific years even if it was a identical vehicle but one year newer you couldnt type of thing. I didnt see any Hilux's on it but I did see the Surf (4 Runner).
