98 Camry V6 with only 65000 miles and automatic transmission. Problem arises when accelerating, rpm would not exceed 2300. On 1 st gear, acceleration up to 2000 rpm and it shifts to 2nd gear. When I step on the peddle to accelerate from 2nd gear onwards, the rpm counter would accelerate only to 2300 rpm and stay there, thus the car would accelerate slowly until time to switch gears and the rpm counter would drop again. What could be possibly wrong with the car for it NOT to accelerate beyond 2300 rpm. Any help is much appreciated.

Check your air intake system for obstructions. How long has it been since it had a tune-up? Have you ever changed the fuel filter? Get under and hit the catalytic converter with the side of your fist. Listen for a rattle indicating melted internals.

Yes, the car has been serviced regularly, oil and filter and... with the exception being the fuel filter where I haven't changed it yet. On neutral, the car can rev up to 4500 rpm. Its not missing or knocking. The initial pickup of the car indictates that there is power in the car (in first gear from stationary to go)Its just 2nd gear and onwards where the rev counter would not go over 2300 rpm even when I'm flat on the pedal. I suspect there might be a leak in one of the hoses somehow connected to the computer in the engine but not positive. I checked the trigger(wrong terminology I apologize) on top of the engine where you can rev the car to increase rpm and its working fine. Its returning back to idle correctly. This is weird. It just started happening and its killing my curiousity. I think I might need to send it in for an engine diagnostic.
