Hello all. I know this is a Tacoma forum, but I have a question that can most likely be answered by a good mechanic. I drive a 2001 Tundra, but my question is about my mother-in-law's 1987 Toyota truck.

It was my father-in-law's - he died in 1990 and my mother-in-law doesn't drive it much.

The passenger side brake locked up on me when I recently attempted to take the truck to get the inspection done. I had to pull the caliper off to get it home.

I replaced that caliper, drove it around a bit and thought the issue was fixed. This was about two months ago.

Drove it yesterday to get it washed for her and the issue came back on the same side with the new caliper. However, I was able to get it home without a complete lockup. The pedal went hard.

So, I am guessing there must be some other issue. I have seen some folks say replace the hoses, as old hoses may not let the fluid flow back properly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Brent

It's weird that 2 months would pass between the first and second incident. Because the 2nd episode was with the new caliper, that would seem to eliminate the caliper assembly as the cause. This would seem to point to the hoses / lines, but I can't figure out how a blockage or crimp would disappear for 2 months.

It's possible there may be something stuck in the lines somewhere. The caliper would have been my first guess as well.

Inspect yer lines carefully. Also, did you bleed out the LSPV (load sensing proportional valve)? Those git gummed up and can really throw yer system out of whack. Mine wouldn't let me use the rear brakes at all and I had to give it a few good whacks/2x4 adjustments before I could bleed them out.
