I just bought a 1997 camry and it has 138000 miles on it. There is a small rattle that is coming out of the rear of the car that sounds like the spare tire or something is rattling. But i have been in the trunk, under the car and moved everything I can get my hands on. Does anyone know what struts sound like when they are going???? It is almost like the struts are a little loose, but i have checked and they are tight!! They feel like they are a little soft, but they don't bounce excessively so I don't want to spend the money if it is not them. Please help!!!!!Thanks Rob

Sounds like the fairly common Camry clunk - Check the rear stabilizer/sway bar bushings. They are about a foot in from the tires on either side, should solve your issue, very cheap.
'93 camry, '96 camry, '99 camry, same noise/fix.

Reference: http://turboninjas.com/camry/sa.pdf page 95, look for "bushing"

Edit:
You can check these easily enough...give the shake test, if you can move the bar inside the bushing, they're worn - at 138k, they're likely worn.
