: Window rain deflectors RFM80 10-22-2009, 07:16 AM I am seriously considering buying a set of window rain deflectors. I wanted to see how many of you have them on your tundra's currently and what you think of them?...
I live in Los Angeles so I don't see much rain, but when it does start to pour I like to have my windows down to get a little breeze and not have the windshield fog up (without having to use vent air).
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated! mytundrarocks 10-22-2009, 07:45 AM I have them. They are o.k. I've had to redo the tape on them twice and it needs it again. The wind noise is very loud I find. I remember when she was brand new, all the glass down it felt like a convertable, just the wind almost no noise at all. Now all i hear is wind blowing by these flapping plastic gutters. I'm not exactly happy with them but they are still on so i don't know what that means. They look nice and are great when it rains but the noise all the time it's almost not worth it.... What brand are they? Don't they fit into the window track or do you have the ones that stick to the body with double sided tape.... spenser24 10-22-2009, 08:56 AM My truck came w/ 3m taped ones (AVS / Lund, i believe). Not sure if the in-track ones have less noise or not. I'm gonna guess that both versions are going to be loud if driving with window down.
Never had them on any other vehicle but find myself using them to crack the windows when parked in 95 degree heat. hofkamp83 10-22-2009, 10:19 AM i have the double sided tape ones and have had them on for about 3 years now and never any problems, no flapping, wind noise or having to redo the tape, my truck has never seen a garage and been in heavy snow in south dakota and some hot summers down in texas. I can't remember the brand off the top of my head i think i got stampede. The more prep you do cleaning the surface for the tape to stick the longer it will last.
Andrew mytundrarocks 10-22-2009, 10:47 AM I have the tape ones. I heard the in track ones cause the window motors to go, eventually. navytoy82 10-22-2009, 10:58 AM Weathertech has some that go inside the window channel WeatherTech - WeatherTech Side Window Deflectors, Vents, Rain Guards, Wind Deflectors (http://www.weathertech.com/store/product.aspx?ItemGroupId=4) but i have not heard if they burnout the window motor or not. My Father has some on his 96 Tacoma and my buddy had some on his 96 Sierra, i thought they were really convienant but the y were the stick-on ones and they both have had to redo the sticky tape. I have thought of getting some but haven't spent the money, if did go with some they would be the inside the cahnnel type. pistolpete 10-22-2009, 11:12 AM I have the WADE in-channel vent visors (http://www.wadeauto.com/Product.asp?SubCatID=3)and have had them for 5 yrs now....not a problem at all....I put them on about 3 months after having the truck and cleaned the track EXTREMELY well with water and some ethyl acetate (nail polish remover for you non-chemists out there)....Mine are still holding strong, no flapping no increased noise over stock windows and because they are the thinner version... no noise increase upon rain....these are definitely higher quality than the Weathertech or other such brands....I love them and had a pair on my old Chevy Blazer which lasted 10yrs with no problems and NO MOTOR BURN-out in either vehicle....the motor burnouts people are experienceing are due to operator error misaligning the vents upon initial install or not keeping the window closed for the ??week?? suggested timeframe for proper adhering....the real key is diligent cleaning of the track prior to install....tape doesn't stick to dirt or "rubber release agent" used in the weatherstipping manufacturing process.
Pictures in my photo gallery here (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/gallery/browseimages.php?c=1162&userid=) G2SSM 10-22-2009, 07:33 PM I had the tape on ones but now have the Weathertech in channel. The drivers side window took a bit to work in but it's been fine for the last year.
These are a lot quieter than the tape on ones. Can't comment on the quality vs. the Wade but mine are ok. CJM_T100 10-22-2009, 07:52 PM Have had tape on ones on both a camry and my t100, no issues at all. Clean the area beforehand wit alcohol and it will stick well and not come off. eharri3 10-22-2009, 08:00 PM I have stampede ventvisors front and rear on my 09 Crewmax. They're stickon but it's a heavy tape and they're well designed to fit the contours of the doors. What I really like is on the edges theres a tiny lip in the plastic that curves inward a bit over the tape strip to prevent water from getting to the tape whereas with alot of designs the tape strip is more exposed to the elements.. Had one come loose because I didn't line it up right. Been on for 6 months after I fixed that one with no other problems. I prefer stick-on to in channel just because it's a black truck and I think it looks smoother without the windshield strip visable. bstaley 10-22-2009, 10:10 PM I'll agree with pistolpete. I've got the Wade in-channels and no problems at all. redtailtundra 10-24-2009, 10:18 AM Weathertechs are the way to go. I've had them for both front and rear windows since day one. No problems in almost 4 years now and still look good. Tundraman10 10-24-2009, 02:05 PM http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/1739/1181/29345590412_large.jpg
I'm on my 2nd set of AVS vent visors. Paid $54 from Advance Auto Parts. 1st set one of back ones blew off while dad took the car through a car wash. The first set last for 5 years. Just installed this set in Aug 09. Also bought a set for my 300M and my sisters maxima.
Don't take your truck through an automatic car wash if you decide to with vent visors. hand wash. Tundrage 10-24-2009, 02:25 PM I have had the Weathertech in channel type in three different vehicles, and have had great success with them. I have never noticed them being noisy. They are made of a heavier plastic that the stick ons that I have had, which makes them much sturdier. They also hug the profile of the vehicle closer, so they are less intrusive in appearance. If installed properly, they do not interfere with the operation of the window. They are available in a dark, or a lighter tint. Auto vent shade for almost 3 years without any problems. Parked outside. Keeping out the rain worth the extra noise. Dog agrees. shatto 10-25-2009, 12:18 AM I want something to deflect the water away from the side window.
Lurker,
Know why the A/C comes on when you turn on the defroster? SO THE WINDOWS DON'T FOG!
Driving in the rain with a window cracked is so your great grandfather. Godckr 10-25-2009, 11:57 PM i have the weathertechs and don't have anything bad to say about them. good product;) Bigblue-gen1 10-26-2009, 11:23 AM Personal oppinion - I love them. Never had them on a vehicle before. I smoke, so it's nice to be able to crack the window, even in the winter.
Auto Ventshade stick on's on mine. Five years now +/-. I did have to redo the tape on one a couple years ago. I take it through the car wash all the time, never had one come off, but I do think about it when I'm in there. I wasn't real fond of sticking them on the paint at first but I've gotten over it. TundraSkyline 10-28-2009, 09:23 AM Definitely go with weathertech (http://www.weathertech.com/) |
