: BAKFLIP or OTHER BED COVERS... RFM80 10-22-2009, 08:21 AM Anyone have a Bakflip bed cover? I'm looking for a review...
Also, if anyone has any kind of bed cover, please post ur thoughts on how you like it, what could be better, etc...
Thx!! spenser24 10-22-2009, 08:44 AM Search and you shall find. Numerous threads on bed covers.
I have Retrax and plenty happy. Will cost you over $1K, but less than Roll n Lock.
Access Cover was my second choice. It's a soft cover and much less costly. I could be wrong, but seem to recall several TSers complained about BakFlip. Contact Luke(?) at Truck Alterations (he is on TS and they are an advertiser here) if you want the Access Cover. hujorgan1 10-22-2009, 09:03 AM I got my first BakFlip in 2006 and have had it replaced under warranty twice. It is a great design and style, but the construction quality is lacking. If I had it to do over again, I would not get the BakFlip. RFM80 10-22-2009, 09:23 AM Search and you shall find. I got a quote for a roll n lock installed for $1200 out the door.....I think I am going with that. spenser24 10-22-2009, 10:48 AM I got a quote for a roll n lock installed for $1200 out the door.....I think I am going with that.
That's a decent price for R&L with install. Do some looking around on TS as some may have reported that the cover does tend to fade if not taken care of. I think the entire hard 'lid' is covered with some sort of vinyl on R&L. I'm not preaching Retrax (although I love mine), either one should be good. INSTALL plays a SIGNIFICANT part of making your bed water resistant. Good Luck and let us know. mytundrarocks 10-22-2009, 11:40 AM i went with the standard $250 roll it up youself cover and it works good for me. Marauder 10-22-2009, 12:10 PM I got a Truxedo Truxport cover. Just a cheap roll up. Install was simple and looks nice. Only paid $236 shipped, so at that price I can put a few of them on over the years compared to the cost of other ones. BobbyB 10-22-2009, 12:32 PM I got the undercover one on my TRD, mainly cause northeastern wisconsin gets some snow so I wanted something that could take the weight of that, plus keep the water out, AutoAnything had it at my door in 5 dyas for 688. Togman 10-22-2009, 01:42 PM NEED PHOTOS of the Bakflip and the UNDERCOVER on your trucks.
Also, does the undercover allow you addtional clearance for the transportation or taller items like the Rubbermaild Totes? I think the retrax causes the the totes not to fit, right? spenser24 10-22-2009, 02:56 PM NEED PHOTOS of the Bakflip and the UNDERCOVER on your trucks.

The Retrax is 'rigid', so to speak. It's flat with no bow across the middle. Pretty much the interior height of your bed will be the same. What it does do though, it allows you to put something taller, towards the tailgate and then lock the remainder of the 'rigid' cover in position. R&L operates in a similar fashion (as I recall) but only has specific sections that can be locked in the partially open position. chinaloy 10-22-2009, 06:21 PM have a retrax. highly recommended. Transferred it from my 01 to my 05.
Wish it could be more waterproof but small leaks here and there are manageable.
Just having the ability to put all my tools in the bed and have them hidden is great. Add the lock and it's almost perfect.
the only thing i would add is the remote lock for the cover and the tailgate.
It takes great abuse and still looks good. I was actually standing on it the other day while I was trying to pull some stuff out of the bed. Togman 10-22-2009, 07:12 PM Does retrax sell a remote lock kit? G2SSM 10-22-2009, 07:28 PM No one mentioned the Advantage Hard Hard Trifold. I had the original soft copy on my ford and now have the hard hat on my tundra.
I like the flexibility. It comes completely off or folds.
The hard hat has a rigid underlay so it's also secure when you lock your tailgate. spenser24 10-22-2009, 08:41 PM Does retrax sell a remote lock kit? I think they have a version that works remotely via key fob. Togman 10-22-2009, 10:21 PM I think they have a version that works remotely via key fob.
OK, How much does something like this cost? p-car-tower 10-23-2009, 05:31 AM I've had the Bakflip for ~3 years and am so-so on it. First 2 years were fine, but within the last year I've had to re-glue much of the sealing rubber and now need to re-glue several of the panel edges into their guides. Also noticed a few new leaks here and there. I did the install myself and it isn't too hard.
I thought of the Retrax or similar but couldn't justify the additional cost for the 8 or so times per year I have stuff in there to be protected. Alcoholicaust 10-23-2009, 05:42 AM I just put the Fold-A-Cover g4 on last night. So far, after ~15 or so hours, I'm happy. rzintegra 10-23-2009, 06:05 PM I just installed the bak flip g2 today so... i can't add my penny's regarding if it's good or bad, I know that after searching around and checking how much they are going for the bakflip had the features that i wanted and need it, and i got it for $698 shipped.
installation was easy and it looks good, i just uploaded some pics of it installed, look at my gallery if you want to know how it looks on my 06 DC.
I hope that it holds up to my expectations and winter is coming so i will find out how it holds up to the southwest colorado winter.
Good luck with the cover that you choose. DJ_Tundra 10-25-2009, 08:22 AM I don't have any pics but I also have the under cover. IMO best cover you can get. It weighs about 56 lbs so I can take it off and put on by myself, they are paintable and very durable. I walk on mine and it doesn't even budge. Check out their web site. 2-DRY 11-06-2009, 12:10 PM I have the Advantage Hard Hat Premier on mine. So far it's great! No problems or issues. No leaks, It has the soft rag top finish. I get a lot of complements when I fold it up to carry something that would cause the Undercover to look like a Flying Hatch Back!!! Really easy removal when you don't want it on... No hardware sticking out in the bed. 4Runnerspv 11-07-2009, 04:53 PM I have a Gaylord's X-2000 that I LOVE. It is worth every penny. I love the remote release. Alcoholicaust 11-07-2009, 05:09 PM I've got the Fold-a-cover G4 elite. Love it. koltonv 11-10-2009, 11:36 AM I looked long and hard to find the right tonneau cover for my Tundra. Now I know my perfect tonneau cover may not be yours so I will let you know my thought process so you can make an informed decision. In my opinion you have really 4 options types of covers, fiberglass, cloth, flipping, or retractable. Let me run through the pros and cons, if you do not need to remove your cover often the fiberglass is a great choice. I have a few friends who went this way and they love the water proof ability, while still being able to lock. For the most part these are light enough to be lifted off your truck with not much effort. Also they are stored easily, if you don’t have the “camper” type, the flat type can be flipped on its side and stored on a garage wall. The problem I have with this type is that there are times when I need to pick something big up at the store and I’m driving straight from work. This would require me to go home first, remove the top and head back to the store. I don’t know about you, but I have been heading home and made a quick run by the store and find that something just does not fit in the back with a cover on. The second cover I looked at was cloth or vinyl. While this would have given me a lot of flexibility in the removing part, it offered almost no protection in the “keep the tools in the back of the truck” part. I also found that they were to expensive for what I would get. The Backflip type tonneau is kind of a hybrid between the fiberglass and the retractable. From what I can tell they are almost completely water proof, and if you need to throw something in the back of your truck they fold away with almost no effort. I did not go with one of these, and I will get into the reason later. Lastly you have the retractable covers. I have a friend how has the Roll N Lock and loved it. You can rollup and utilize your bed when needed and unroll when you are done. Some years ago I had a Tacoma and I had a tool box in the back, I had it broken into a few times. The tool box was like a neon sign that said “FREE TOOLS”. I know have a large tool box in the back of my truck with a retractable tonneau cover, very discreet. I also was thinking about getting a bed extender and putting the tool box in that ‘cage’ so that it did not slide around. I have not done this yet, but I did stop by home depot and got a 2x8, since they have 1st cut free, I had them cut to length and I slid it in the board pockets… works great. Now the retractable cover is not water proof my any means, but I did not have a problem with things getting a little wet. Once I decided on the retractable, I needed to decide between the Roll BAK and the Roll N Lock, the BAK has thicker slats, and can hold more weight, not that I would be standing on it, but just did not look as flimsy. The BAK does not have an external lock so you must open the tail gate to open. The Roll N Lock has a vinyl over aluminum cover, while the BAK has a power coated cover. One think I love about the Roll N Lock is that fact that from the back you can switch the lock to retract all the way, or retract to the first stop. The BAK you manually put in the stop’s and from the rear of the truck it will always stop at the next stop. You must walk beside your truck holding the locking mechanism open past all the stops to retract all the way. Or you can have just one stop, so it’s open or closed, no in-between. I did not choose the flip type because they were about the same price as the retractable. It was almost a coin toss to decide which retractable I was going to get but I ended up getting the Roll BAK, I was just concerned about the vinyl on the Roll N Lock. I’m going to keep my truck a long time and did not want to tear a year or two down the road. I ended up paying 850 on ebay for a new one. Hope this helps you make an informed decision on which you want to get. Togman 11-10-2009, 12:44 PM Who makes the folding cover which lays ON TOP of the bed rails like the undercover does? | |
