So I see where the new 4.0 is rated at 270hp. Anyone know what they did to pick up the output. Can it be done to the 05/06 year models.

The money it would take to reproduce the enhanced V6 exactly would better be spent trading up on a new truck already equipped with said V6. Then again, given the weight gains on the new 4Runner you might not want to. How about (aftermarket) modding your existing 4.0?

I think they went dual vvti vs. just vvti. vvt on the intake and exhaust valves.

YOu won't like the new 4.0 for oil changes; it has a canister filter and is much more difficult to change than the older 4.0.

I agree with Creosote though; trade up if you really want the new one.

Just curious mostly. I'm happy with my 06/4.0, I don't tow more than 2K lbs anymore. It has all the power I need and fuel economy has been very good.
