I have scoured my owners manual and I can't find it. At what mileage/kms should I have the timing belt changed? Is it a belt or a chain?

You didn't populate your "garage" area so we don't know what vehicle/engine you are referring to.

The TSM recommends that the timing belt on the 4.7L V8 (2UZFE) is replaced at 90,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first.

Sounds like a couple have gone at 50-60K recently. Getting me a little worried. I'm at 50K/5yrs.

I thought the serpentine belt was at 90,000 miles and the timing belt is at 100,000 miles?

Timing belt is 90k and if your water pump is leaking like mine was it can make the belt brittle.

Under normal driving conditions 90K or 72 months. This is for the 4.7. , It looks like the new 4.6 has a chain. I went about 115K before doing mine, just kept putting it off. Might as well do the water pump, tensioners and pulleys while it is torn down. I went ahead and let the dealership do mine, good thing I let them do it because the new waterpump they put in leaked after a few days. That would have been a ***** if I would have had to take everything back off!

You are in the same boat I am in. I have an 02 with 79K. I bought the stuff a few days ago and will tackle it in the next week or two.

I would have to dig up the reciept but i think it was between $600-$700 for everything. Again, I was glad I had the dealership do the work because they had a 12 month 12k mile warranty on it.

Just finished my timing belt replacement yesterday. I wanted to be thorough so I split the process into 2 days of about 5hrs each. The original belt looked fine w/o any cracks, but it did look a tiny bit stretched, as the belt cogs had a slight gap in the cam sprocket grooves. After 89k miles and 9yrs, it was due. I didn't replace the water pump or the tensioner, both had no evidence of any leaks. For ~$200, its a load off my mind. Here's what I used:
toyota t-belt: $50
GMB t-pulleys: $85
2gal toyota red: $53
2gal distilled water: $2
gatorback acc. belt: $27
8 NGK g-pwr plugs: $22

I had mine done at 84,000 as I had the day off to have it done, this was 2 years ago.

I now have 100,900 miles on my 2004.

I suggest purchasing the timing belt kit from eBay vendor volkstoy (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330414878844&viewitem=&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D1&category=33625) ($238). It has the water pump and it is highly recommended that you replace it since you have the whole front of the engine off already.

Your local shop should do it (and stand by their work for a reasonable period of time) for anywhere from $300-$400. I would purchase 2-3 gallons of Toyota Red coolant from your dealer as well as the distilled water and supply it to the shop so that you know quality fluids are going in your system. :tu:
