Never realize G2 Tacoma DC can be equipped with 2.7L from Toyota website. I thought 4.0L was the only choice.
Anyway, anyone knows the difference between DC 4X2 (3665 lb.) and DC 4X2 PreRunner (3825 lb.)?

think you will find the prerunner has 4x4 suspension ( no xfer case or front diff)
i have a 4 banger 5 lugger and can't imagine a double cab, would be just a bit sluggish i think ( i am showing 2757 lbs weight on registration)
so with gvw with my weight i can haul 1400 lbs, and you with 4 people a lot less ( think like 5 or 6 hundred pounds cargo)
i have had mine full a few times and is ok but not a speed daemon for sure. does what i want just fine though !
it might be a manufacture millage game . the fleet has to average so many mpg.
years ago my company stuck me with a ford fairlane with a 4 banger ( they got it dirt cheap) and that was a hazzard to drive.
with a strong headwind i could not get above 65 mph. and most of the time was at full throttle on the freeway

My bad. It's 2011.
TP, how do you cramp 5 people in your 5-lug? Maximum capacity for AC is 4.

Likely a stop-gap measure to bring the CAFE down. They really need a new 2.7L as this one just isn't cutting it, especially when compared to the FWD 1AR-FE. The 2TR needs to be updated with dual VVT-i like the 1GR was in the FJ and 4Runner, and a 6-speed automatic needs to be mated to it as well.
Acceleration would be atrocious in a DC with the 4 banger. My 4WD DC loafs around with the 1GR, but I couldn't imagine the 4 cylinder. I wonder what the rear end ratio is. I would expect a 4.100 ratio for something as heavy as the DC.

never said i could haul 5
i said

my reg cab has bench seat for 2 adults and small kid only
but have just me and my dog so good room ;-D
a lot of people get the double cab and think they can haul good cargo and 3 friends, and it just isn't so, weight is added for gvw
i see post all the time about "i was riding on my bumpstops with 4 of us when we went hunting/fishing for a week "

HiLux 2WD DC is offered in Australia w/ 2.7L and 4.1 axle. Their versions have higher GVWR/GCWR.

I think the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder has huge promise but two things need to happen:
1) They need to bring the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder's technology to something along the lines to what they are putting in the rest of their engine line up. This means giving it dual variable valve timing (compared to the current single - intake only - variable valve timing) and the few other goodies that they offer in every other engine in their car, truck & SUV line up currently.
2) They need to offer the 4 cylinder with the same number of transmission gears as the V6 (i.e. 5speed auto, 6 speed manual instead of the current 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual).
Upgrade #1 will give the engine more power obviously. I would predict somewhere in the 175-185 HP and 185-195 ft.lbs of torque range depending on how Toyota tunes it.
Upgrade #2 will allow the engine to stay in a more efficient power range accross the speed & RPM range, especially when coupled with say 4.10 gearing. This will work well with the enhanced engine power & torque, as well as the nice flat torque curve dual VVT-i helps.
With these upgrades this engine will be a viable, solid, base engine for those who want reasonable power & torque, but maybe don't need to really tow much more than 3500 pounds say. Also, considering how fuel efficient this engine is currently, with the above mentioned upgrades which would make it even more efficient, it will be a serious fuel miser. Toyota could offer this engine in every cab configuration (reg, access, double) and 4x4 or 4x2 with the above mentioned upgrades and it would hold it's own power wise. With a few simple bolt on TRD accessories or aftermarket accessories (e.g. headers, exhaust, intake kit), this engine could probably push 200 HP and 200 ft-lbs of torque.

****e2k:
All of the above suggestions are good except I am not aware of any longitudinal 4-cylinder/5A combination.
I too would like to see more configuration similar to last generation of HiLux offer in North America: DRW, long bed (7.5')...
