For those that know my ride, I know this may be over the top, but, I am working a
complete Red/Silver color theme for the engine bay. My ride is not a DD and I am working to make this 2000 a little special. I just completed the valve covers in Red and still have more pcs in the engine to do. For now, I am working the CAI stock box to prepare for the next upgrade with the SC (another project I will color key). The CAI not installed yet, but, just to share for those that like to play with detail.

My stock airbox was lost at a dealer years ago, so, I needed to start with a "rough" box given to me. The original from Toyota cost almost $400. Go figure. Not paying that price for a CAI. The air intake tube is new, so, I can make this work for the box.

I start with a stock box that looks a little abused and from a owner that must have over oiled his filter. Some TLC needed here for wash, clean, prep, etc.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo354/pesos09/Stockbox.jpg

After a lot of prep, I head over to the shop for paint. More cleaning prep, adhesion prep, etc. My friend Ron in the booth finally shooting some clear.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo354/pesos09/ClearcoatRon.jpg

The hardware needs repair/replace. I decide to repair what I can. Notice the rusty bolts. Seems that is not going to work. Will be replaced with SS 10mm new. Saved the clips and metal bushings (I cut off the retainer tabs on the bushings to make them cleaner) with high temp silver.
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo354/pesos09/Hardware.jpg

Shooting clear right now for the new air intake tube.

This is a pic of the cover as we finish the next clearcoat. (the bottom looks the same and looks good)

The MAF is also already painted in OEM so it matches nicely. No install pics, just yet....still pulling more pcs into the mod to work this engine detail. The story continues. I know, may be over the top, but, I enjoy detailing and think when done, it should come together okay.

Careful man, Toyota may want your Tundra for a historical restoration display piece. Even though it may have less on the odometer than some Tundras built in 2010!

Lookin good John!

(Now I'm wondering what your house looks like!! Is everything color-coordinated there as well??? LOL!!)

LOL. Actually, could be fun. I have been asked by a dealer if I would submit my ride to RI or Boston Auto Show to display my 2000. I might get into the show to promote Tundra as an original TOY, but, need to finish some of the detail first. Be cool if I get in though. Getting older, but, I think, getting better, and not too many original 2000's in this condition....I think.

Thanks. I am working a full Red/Silver engine (hoses, engine parts, bolts, etc) theme and know that detail may not be of interest to many, but, heck, I enjoy detailing. I cannot wait to get more pcs done and then actually install the SC sitting in my garage as the final piece. It will be Silver with Red TRD logo and with all new hardware, but, that is later, but, coming soon.

As far as my house, I am also into that "detail". 10 years+ working every room for upgrades. The work is NEVER done....Reminds me, I have a lot to finish in that area as well. :)

John, I say this with all due respect..... I hate you sometimes. :heh:

Just playing, but I really can't give enough credit to you for your ride. Easily the best looking first gen on the planet(and it's not even black!). I hope you keep it for a long time. It makes mine look like crap, but I keep remembering mine is daily driven and abused, so its okay. :D

Thanks guy. I know it is a compliment. Sorry, it is not black, but, heck, RED Pearl is rare and was only around for 2 years. I do have an advantage as it is not a DD and I
do enjoy detailing, or is it restoring after all of these years. I have more crazy detail to share later for the complete engine package.

Funny thing, on cardomain, it must be a game there, because some people rate me a 1!!!! Go figure. At least some people rate me well and appreciate the work and detail.

You ride is coming along nicely. Keep attention to little things, and as a DD, she does show well!

Finally home in NE gang (and so nice to be back!). Updating my thread here as I got the pcs together.

Put it together to check the finish look and the finish is durable. Did not paint the flex
section because worried about adhesion and possible chipping with flexing etc. For now,
I like the detail look. Need to do some other powdercoat work on engine (more pics later) before install, but, you get the idea.

My CAI fully restored and modded. I know, too much time on my hands thinking of details I can play with.

Looks great. Any problems with the airbox clamps and the paint? Also, the intake tube gets very hot right near the TB, will your paint hold up to the temp fluctations?

Thanks. The airbox clamps and bushing hardware were removed from the box, reconditioned, and painted in high heat silver. They should be fine. The hose clamps are stainless and should be fine. I know the intake is warm at the TB, but, I expect it to hold up well. The paint finish is strong and should be okay. Not a DD, so, not going to see extended periods of high heat or work. Probably more for show why I did it, but, I think it will go okay when done. When I get my other engine powdercoat stuff done, will install and see how it holds up.

Just very very nice JB!

Thanks amigo. I think it will show well with the SVH setup on board and matches nicely
with the valve cover project I finished. The MAF sensor is painted Red Pearl as well, so, should match up complete.
Still got some engine powdercoat work to do to add to the theme, then I will post some final install pics.

Right now, changing out all of the firewall and inner fender bolts (10mm) to polished stainless cap bolts to standardize the hardware. Eliminates the dull silver,
rusty brown, or zinc colored bolts that were OEM  Anal detail, but, looks much better.

Wow, reviving my own thread. After months of many changes on the personal and work front ( I have returned to the USA this year), I am finally playing with the Toy again.
So, kicking in a lot of details in the next couple of weeks and my OEM airbox and special add-ons finally going in. Updates coming within 2 weeks.
Nice to be making some changes again. :D

Up dating my thread. I have done detailing and performance together, so, they may overlap.

A lot of detailing here, but, how it looks installed:

Looks amazing. On another topic, is this site resizing our images? I've noticed mine and other pics are much smaller.

Again, the engine looks great.

Yes, that's something new with the revised format. I don't like it either.

Agree, as it makes it more difficult to see the detail. Is a thumbnail better to click and see? Not sure.

JB, I'm sure your engine bay never got dirty in the first place, but any suggestions on how to clean the bay itself? I've been over it with engine shampoo/degreaser, but there is still a light film of dirt on the firewall, wheel wells, etc. I hate the prospect have having to craw in there and clean everything by hand.

Not really, just a little crazy about what I can do to detail this ride to be different and looking too much that
can be changed. I do appreciate the comment and thanks. More crazy detail coming up.

Actually, it was dirty as a DD in the first 2 years. Had beginnings of rusty bolts, acid leaks from that dreaded battery, and a little salt thrown in. When I started my work assignment way back
in 2002, the truck then switched to garage queen as I was not home. Now, I am keeping it that way.

To answer your Q, you will have to put a little elbow grease in it, if you want to clean it up nicely. Spray and wash will not get it done by itself. Do it once or twice
depending on how much it needs to be cleaned, and then good to go. It is not hard to maintain once you get to that level. A little polish (Klasse AIO) is all I used. I also
have replaced all hardware (10mm bolts) which were rusty/old on the firewall/fender. This just adds to the detail effect.

Yeah, I'm going to start in the spring. It's looking too much like a DD (which it is, really) and not as pristine as it use to be. I'll really anal about keeping it looking good, but lately I can't keep up with it, and it is hard to justify dropping $1000's into a 98K mile truck just for appearances sake.

Right now, for example, I want to do something with the black plastic fender flairs. They have small nicks, scratches, and little cuts in them but I'm looking at $300 or so just to make them pretty again. I'd like to coat them with something but if I do that, then I have to coat all the other plastic too to make it look consistent.

It never ends, does it?

I hear ya. Just depends on where to attack and how much you want to do. You can clean your engine bay nicely and do it for little cost. As far as your flares, that is a different story. If you
coat them, then, I agree, you would want to do the other stuff to keep the look consistent. Maybe replace them if you can find some that are hanging around in someones garage (post a WTB in classifieds?). Possibly
paint in flat black just to clean them up? Not sure if that will cover the scratches well enough. Detailing takes a little time to do, but, if you do a little at a time, generally speaking, the
truck will still look good and show well for its age.

P21S / S100 Total Auto Wash is a great cleaner to get your engine bay on its way to cleanliness. Non-acidic, so it wont fade plastic under the hood/wheel wells or harm the paint. And I second JB's recommendation on Klasse AIO under the hood, that stuff performs miracles. Also great in the door jambs.
