I have a 2001 Tacoma with a 2.7 3rz. It has 73,000 miles on it and I have had it since about 35,000. I have had no trouble with the truck, but I got a chance to look at the Car Fax and it show the oil pump was replaced at 21,000 miles. This seems unusual to me, I called the Toyota dealer that did it and all their record shows is, change oil pump and the price was $450. Does the head and timing chain cover have to come off to change an oil pump? Has anyone heard of an oil pump going bad in this few of miles, and wouldn't it be warrenty work? I question if my engine has ever been apart, maybe a dealer scam? What do you all think? I am trying to sell this truck and this might concern would be buyers.

The head is taken off when replacing the pump housing. If you just replace the outer cover and the rotors, it's accessible by taking off the crank pulley.
