Spoke with a gent at the OC auto show last sunday who supposedly worked for Toyota Western Region. I was complaining about no V8 in the new 4Runner and he told me a V8 would be available in the Tacoma soon and possibly in the 4Runner at a later date.

Given the economy and new fuel mileage requirements, I would be surprised if that's accurate information. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a V8 in a Tacoma and back in a 4Runner... I just didn't really expect to see Toyota offer it in either one.

Sometimes a larger engine can match the fuel efficiency of a smaller one under certain situations. A larger engine will usually have more low end torque than the smaller one, which means the larger one can be geared up to loaf along just above idle speed while cruising, and it can accelerate effortlessly without downshifting. Lower rpms mean less friction and pumping losses = better mpg.
Of course, I don't care about mileage, only horsepower :first: :D. The Taco needs a V8 for drag racing. Might as well throw in the 5.7L while you're at it. :heh:

agreed 100%. i drove the new 4 runner and it seems as if the powerband was up high. there wasn't any lower end torque at all. they claim that it makes more power than the 4.7 and almost as much torque, but it's not usable unless you drag race. maybe it was just me? and also just don't get why they made a 4 cyl sienna and the v6 when BOTH gets the same MPG city AND hwy.

Maybe because the 4-cyl is cheaper.... and the V6 is stronger & smoother?
